Round Tubing vs. Square Tubing

Postby tianac2 » Mon Jul 13, 2009 6:34 pm

Hi, me again...

Ok, so I've been looking for a cheap used trailer and I've found a couple that I'm weighing the merits of. Is there a distinct disadvantage to using a trailer built with round tubing vs. square tubing? I found a used onethat's pretty old, made with round tubing and will need some rehab, but its under $100....However, its not worth it if it won't work for what I need it to.

Thanks!

Structurally round tubing probable has more strengths than square tubing.... however it probably makes little difference to trailer weighing in as to what a TD is.... And the cabin are you are making will add structural support to the frame.... Once you get past the above, the real issue is attaching the cabin (mainly the floor) to the frame..... If you drill through tubing it will weaken exactly where you do not it weakened on top of tube for compression load and bottom of tube where it is a expanding load..... Solution here would to have an appropriate number of tabs welded to frame to bolt floor to and then continue "the build" in traditional manner.....

I personally think it matters little if main frame is round or square tubing as long as overall design and tubing size is sufficient to support the "build"...

...basically as Dale stated, the biggest diff, is it's easier to attach things to a square tube than a round one...but, it's a manageable problem....
