which axle

Postby adlibdrama » Mon Mar 22, 2010 4:15 pm

I'm getting ready to order my axle but Im not sure if I should go for a fully rated #8 Dexter with a rating of 1100 lbs or a #9 down rated to 1500 lbs. I'm shooting for a finished weight in the 800lb area. I'm concerned that the #8 will leave me with little margin for error on the weight or when loading up for longer trips. What are folks thoughts on this?

800lbs, I guessing that you are planning on a 4X8? One thing that differs between the #8 and #9 is the bolt pattern. Some people want to match their trailer bolt pattern to the tow vehicle. The #9 come with a 5 lug hub and the #8 has a 4 lug, at least it did when I ordered mine. I'm not sure if you can swap hubs though.

Just picked a Dexter #8 1000 lb axle, with 5 x 4 1/2 bolt pattern.

I went with a 1500lb #9 for my 5'4"x9'. Just felt right.

I have been told that the closer you get to maxing out the axle, the better it rides.

Best of luck.
