Can a Harbor Freight trailer be modified with a bigger axel to add bigger tires?

You don't even have to go that far.

I have seen it done and done often... Its a simple wheel change, don't know the details on what bigger wheels were used off the top of my head. But they were using the existing 4 lug hubs and axle.

I think Ford made a larger 4 on 4 bolt pattern wheel.

Old Mustang or Granada wheels come to mind.

I have also heard that a problem with some...I say some because some work and some don't with the tire hitting the frame.

Back spacing is what to look for...less is better.

Measure from the face plate on the original hub to the frame, subtract an inch.

that is the back space you want.

Find an "Old Guy" that has been around tires for a while and ask him.

Don't ask a kid on a computer! Or mention it is for a Trailer

They will ask "what make and year the Car is.

You don't know that.

If you tell them its for a trailer they will tell you they don't sell trailer rims to go to an RV place or try to sell you the white spoked ones that may not fit.

An "Old Guy" knows this information...not a Kid.

Happy Trails

Given a saw, torch, and welder anything is possible. If you get the HF trailer for free or already have one on hand modifying it can make sense. If you buy one with modifying it in mind, I think you'd do better to build your own or have one built to your specs. Maybe a bit more but you get exactly what you want. If you network and find someone with a saw and welder a frame can be constructed in a day. 2BITS has set the standard for a simple well thought out frame built from two 24 foot pieces of tubing, having the metal yard cut them to 12 feet for transport, and ending up with only 4" of tubing left over!

Also, HF axles cannot be retrofitted with brakes easily (if at all, but anything is possible if you throw enough time and money at it).

Cheers,

Gus
