dropped axles

Postby gene so » Sun Aug 28, 2011 10:07 am

Hello,

I am at the start of design for a custom teardrop trailer. I will be making a frame for a body which is dropped for ten inch ground clearance with a "gooseneck" hitch of 16" height. The body will be wider than standard so I will be gaining room and aerodynamic advantages over the standard kit types available.

Deciding on a standard leaf style of axle as opposed to a torsion, since it can be mounted as such to gain some lowering advantage; I am seeking a dropped axle of unknown dimension. Who has axles which are dropped more than 4 inches? I want larger tires and am aware there is a fair amount of Toyota truck tires/wheels available and should be affordable.

If there is somebody out there with some expereince in this area, I could use your advice. Once I have the specs for the right axle/suspension/wheel setup, then I could start to design the steel tubing frame.

A Dexter #10 is available with a 6" drop, but that's not a lightweight axle any more, rated for 2300-3500 pounds.

And how does a torsion axle with a 45 degree up start angle not give you any drop? Also watch your drop, you arn't just lowering the trailer, you're also lowering the counter height, make sure this is accounted for, or doing anything in the Galley could be a pain in the back.

I have pretty tall tires - P235-75R15 - and with a 10-degree up #9 Dexter axle, the clearance from the road to the bottom of my frame is 12".

With shorter tires and/or 22.5-degree up you'll be pretty close to your 10" clearance.

Aggie, you have just provided the info I was looking for. Now if I order my axle before I forget this thread I will be doing better than my usual.

I am shooting to use 215x15 tires, and a frame to ground of about 10 inches with about 1000 lbs all loaded up
