Kit Trailers with Brakes

Postby katrinad » Tue May 21, 2013 10:09 pm

I "think" I've decided I'd feel better making my teardrop with brakes. I plan to build a lightweight foamie. First estimates puts it around 700-750 lbs empty. I'll be towing up, down, and across the Rockies from Denver with a Subaru Outback.

Originally was planning to get a 5x8 Northern tool trailer but apparently they do not accept brakes. I have no idea where to go from there. Since its Memorial Day already I'm going for a quick build so I can be camping by the end of June at the latest. I'd like to go the easiest route possible.

What kit trailers can I buy online that can come with brakes, or be ordered custom with brakes? Alternatively, what type of places do I call around to that could make me a small trailer with brakes. I definitely do not feel confident welding a frame by myself that is roadworthy.

Not sure if any Kit trailer are available with breaks preinstall.

Northern Tools has a few trailer with 3500 lbs axles that will except brakes and hubs. according to there
web page. From what I read so far most people with smaller axles have to special order hubs what will fit
their axle and then breaks that will fit the hub.

You might call RedTrailer.com and ask if they have a small trailer with hubs that will accept break. Maybe
even etrailer.com

The two separate torsion axle I’m looking at buying only have a break option for the 3500 one, but I been
told I can call and have the 3500 one built to the 2000 lbs ones.( softer rubber bushings ) so I can get breaks.

I hope someone else have a better answer for you. June is coming close and I have only read about breaks so far. :(

I wanted brakes on my trailer too. but unfortunately they don't make them in my price range. I looked for three months and having no luck I just got the HF frame. I called various shops and the most inexpensive I could find was $750 for a custom made with brakes. I live in GA and I called shops all over GA and Alabama and Tennessee and learned that they don't make a light weight axle that supports having brakes. The axle is somewhat expensive was told that they cannot be added to the HF trailer for the 12 inch tire without a lot of mechanical trouble. I tried my best but decided that having brakes would cost me an additional $350 or more to add them, that I did not have. so I don't have brakes if in the future I decide to build another it will have brakes. and I will do it up great because I will have won the lottery.

    Terry,
I don't recall reading of anyone installing a torsion axle on a box store trailer, but I see no reason why it couldn't easily be done. For about $400. or so, you can buy a #8 Dexter (660#-1100#) or a #9 (1000#-2200#) with brakes. They come with either four or five lug hubs.
