HF trailer fender ?

Postby kludge » Thu Sep 05, 2013 11:49 pm

How high is the fender? Above the frame rail of above the axle center line, either diminsion will work.

The sketchup model posted in the CAD forum doesn't have the fenders in it.

I don't know what the manufacturer calls for, But when ever I build an over the wheel build (and don't want the fenders to stick up into the cabin) I mount the top of the fender 3" above the frame and have never had a problem on multiple builds.

I removed mine after cutting a tire in half with the offending bolt in the top of the fender. I simply rhino lined the wooden wheel well and tossed the fenders. As I recalled I also had to over build 2 1/2" to clear the factory fender and now without the stock fender the tires will rub on occasion so 3" sounds right to me as well.

Don't know why but there's a lot of pictures gone????

I just built this trailer last winter? Kind of a Prototype. Its very comfortable. The dropped rear floor makes sitting on the edge of the bed and putting on your shoes very easy as well as using the Coffee can in the middle of the night. :?

The next one will be 6' wide with a Full dropped floor and a Sofa bed across the front. This will give me 18" more length on the inside, even with the sofa bed out. (possibly up to 36" with the sofa folded up.)

With the extra 8" in width I can move the AC to the right side and make a taller (maybe deeper) roll out Galley

Lots of great ideas in that trailer, thanks. Very cool minimalist galley.

Where does the AC drain?

Hmmm... OK what's wrong with this picture? :)

This is the HF trailer sketchup model and a 2x4 frame to raise the deck 3-1/2" and it still doesn't clear the tires.

Best I can tell, the model has ~22" diameter tires (10-9/16" radius) and raising the deck 3-1/2" still doesn't clear the tires, much less give any room for spring compression.

Is the model wrong?

Your drawing shows the Axle on top of the Springs. (I think!)

But, I think theres something wrong with you drawing????

I've mounted mine, and I'll bet all the others who stated 3-3 1/2" clearance have mounted it below the springs.

Above the springs puts all the weight on the 4 "U" bolts. Below the Axle all the "U" bolts have to do is hold the Axle in place.

Off the top of my head I don't know what the manufacturer recommends. But as an RV Service Tech and instructor for over 25 years flipping an axle is a very common thing with no negative effects...except those mentioned above, and those mentioned are only my opinion.

Heres a Photo of what your drawing is of.

Image

The bottom of the white metal is the bottom of the frame and the tire comes up about 4" above the bottom of the frame (about the thickness of the frame.) 3 1/2" above that would be the top of the fender. More than enough clearance.

In this picture, with the Axle below the spring I'm spotting the center of the Axle at about 7" below the frame.

Hmmm... the springs are over the axles in the model, so let me ask this... how high is the top of the HF side rail from the ground? If I have that, then I can change the model to reflect reality.

The Axle center is about 7" below the frame. So that plus 11" (half the diameter of the wheel) equals about 18"

Ok, the model says 17" from the top of the rail to the ground.

Also I get 3-13/16" from the center of the axle to the bottom of the rail and 6-13/16" to the top of the rail.

If I adjust the model for ~7" between the axle and the frame there will be plenty of clearance, but that will put the top of the rail ~21" off the ground -- not a problem I suppose, but limits what I can put in the garage.

Just a little something I do, and I don't know what your building yet.

I make my sides 44" high and not 48. I think this makes 4X4X8 trailer look longer and sleeker and a bit more in proportion. IMO it takes away that "Toad Stool look.

This does not impair anything head room wise on the inside. There's still plenty of head room for even a tall person to sit up.

Nothing yet, just looking at an idea for a tipout, and the tire/fender can easily get in the way of that.
