What's the right trailer size for X wide by Y long build?

Postby Gunguy05 » Thu Dec 05, 2013 10:20 pm

I know that for a smaller build, a standard 4 x 8 trailer would work, but I am interested in a proper trailer for a larger either 6 x 10 or 6 x 11 build. How much overhang is too much when looking for a trailer? Would a 5 x 8 trailer work for a 6 x 10 build ? I don't want to skimp on the trailer, it's the foundation, but there are plenty of options in 5 x 8 trailers, not so much once you get above that.

Should I just accept that for a build of this size that I will need to :

1. Custom build a trailer to my specs

2. Hope to come across and old popup that I can tear apart and use the frame that happens to be the right size.

I am a noobie, but am just trying to do all of my research before looking to build. Want to make sure I have all my bases covered, and this seems like the logical starting point.

Thanks,
Brian

In part it depends on how much 'stuff' will be in the trailer to be. How much the final weight will be. The axle and frame need to be capable of that.

Most likely it will be some variation of the 2 + 2 design. WIll be something that 2 adults and 2 kids can sleep in. I'm guessing weight to be 1600 or so lbs, but that is just a rough guestimate based on what other similar builds were from others.

Chubby is a 1850 pound 5 1/2' w x 10' long and is built on a 4x8 Harbor Freight modified frame.

I used the axle cradle and the tongue and not much else.

So in answer to amount of cantilever a foot all directions is not a serious stretch.

My barn has a 2 Foot stretch on the front it is a 5x10 on a 5 x 8 namco cargo trailer frame.

The tongue was modified and does offer just a bit of support but the wood sub framing and the siding provides most of the strength.

My chuck wagon is 40" wide by 7' long and is built on a 40" x 48" Harbor freight frame It cantilevers 24" on the front and 12" on the back. The tongue was extended to avoid interference with the tow vehicle.

So yes you can build out beyond the frame without a great deal of worry.
Growing older but not up !
