Welding questions

Postby 48Rob » Fri Jan 17, 2014 6:39 pm

Can I use 309-3091 for welding mild steel?

Will the stainless cause a problem for the welder who will be coming later to do the real welding on the trailer frame ?
(I'm just tacking things together)

I have a large amount of the rod that is doing no good sitting in a drawer...trying to be frugal...

Yes you can, in fact 309 is rated for joining carbon to SS

Thank you.

I read than on the package, but wanted to be sure it wouldn't cause a problem unforseen to me...

Rob, just about any welding process you choose will go right over your tacks, just be sure and grind them a little first as with any tacks. A 70-S hard wire which is pretty normal in a MIG application won't even know they are there.

Hay 49rob, In my experience it's acceptable to weld mild steel with stainless wire. It could require more effort to grind your welds and drilling through a weld might not be practical. Ihe up side is your welds will be rust resistant. I have welded stainless material with mild steel wire and had a slight loss in stainless properties at the weld.

Thank you.

It is harder to grind, but looks pretty and doesn't rust!
