Trailers have settled on wheels with no offset, the hub face is in the center of the wheel width. Cars and trucks have offset or backspacing that is all over the place. Wheels with the same bolt pattern can have different offsets and backspacing from model to model, year to tear. Sell the existing tow vehicle and the next one may have something different in the wheel department, especially if it is a different make.
I would like to have wheels and tires interchangable between tow vehicles, but IMO, it may not be worth pursuing in the end. Just my opinion. We've had a number of different tow vehicles in 30+ years of trailer ownership. Few of them had the same bolt pattern let alone compatible in other respects. Meanwhile my 30+ year old utility trailer has the same bolt pattern, same offset and backspacing and they are the same size tires as the newest trailer.
