This may sound stupid, but.........

Postby Justjoe65 » Mon Mar 10, 2014 8:21 pm

So here I am constructing my Harbor Freight 5 X 8 trailer, and I have seen where the rule is to shift the Axle back a bit. My question is, is this essential to the build? I see other trailers on here that don’t have the wheels shifted, or appear not too. Maybe it is just my eyes.... But, just trying to see if this is a truly must have for the build? what are the advantages/ disadvantages....

Thanks.

It helps with weight distribution and getting the tongue weight Just right. A heavy galley area in the rear in relation to the weight in the front may need the axle moved aft to get the tongue weight right. Things like batteries, generators on the tongue can help counterbalance. It might be nice to fully complete the trailer before setting the permanent axle position.

Thanks Don! Like I said, I am new to this and want to make it right, but at the same time, just seeing what is right and what is wrong. from the answer you gave, the only right or wrong is weight distrobution. I am good with that, now that I know what path to follow there, and yes, I will do the build then worry about the axle placement when I see where the build puts me.

Thanks again! :D

Fixing the position of the axle later only makes sense when using wheels outboard and when also leaving the fender placement to the end as well. There is a chance of running into door / fender interference if not careful...
