Do I need to repack the bearings on my new Dexter axle?

Postby Krusty » Fri Apr 11, 2014 6:37 pm

I found instructions on HOW to repack the bearings, but no information on whether or not I need to when I receive a new Dexter axle. I repacked the bearings on the harbor freight hubs when I got it because of suggestions here. Should I be doing the same for Dexter hubs?

Probably not. Pull the caps and see if you see grease. If you do, put the caps back on and drive the trailer for five minutes. Stop and feel the hubs. If they are cold or mildly warm to the touch, you are okay.

If they are hot and smoking, you should have repacked the bearings.
Still graced with two eyes and ten fingers (due in no small part to luck!).

Just when you think a problem is solved, an uglier result replaces it.

No, unlike Harbor Freight it is real genuine grease. However I did replace the Chinese bearings and grease using synthetic grease the next year.

I bought my axle as components (axle spindle-to-spindle, right and left brake/backing plate assemblies, brake drum hubs with hardware kits, and spring perches... some assembly required) and had to pack the bearings at assembly. If yours was ordered and came as a complete assembly, I'm sure it was assembled with grease.

If.in doubt, repack them. For your own peace.of mind, you'll know they are done right.
