Rust Reformer, Converter, Treatment

Postby TimC » Tue Jun 01, 2021 9:19 am

Back in the early '80s I used a product that I think was called Duro Rust Treatment. It claimed to react with iron oxides and stop the continuation of rust. I used it on a rusty old pickup and for the two years I had it the rusty spots just seemed to turn black and stay that way without continued rust spots growing. I never primed or painted over it which I know is recommended. I was just giving it a try to see if it works.

Fast forward to today and my TD chassis is in need of some attention. Are the new products, like Rustoleum Rust Reformer, a good choice to apply to a surface that's been wire brushed to remove most of the rust and will get a new coat of paint?

BTW, I am brushing on the new primer and paint. I'm not concerned with brush marks.

Thanks, Tim

Yes. I've had good experience with POR15.

Por 15 is good, but it really only encapsilates the rust, not really converts it.

The new hotness in rust converter is corrseal, I used it on my truck frame and it seems to have done well but no long term results for me yet. It was recommended on my toyota tacoma forum.

Very happy with Ospho! It converts the rust. I use a spray bottle, coat, let it do it's thing then chip off the flakes and apply again. I'll do this a few time if badly rusted, couple at least if not just to be sure I got it. Then paint it out.

Thanks everyone. After taking a wire brush to the tongue it appears the rust is mostly just on the surface.

I saw POR15 at Napa but when I asked for the quart price I said thanks and put it back on the shelf. I'm sure it is great stuff after getting advice from all of you. I just have some surface rust that's mostly wire brushed away and the last paint job was over six years ago. Saw a $6 can of Rustoleum rust inhibitor and decided to go that route. Had enough to do the tongue and both fenders (also just surface rust) and have enough to do my two TV receivers. That'll be good.

Now on to prepping for a total roof paint color change. Beans I am home bound for a little while I might as well get some work done on the old gal.

Thanks everyone. Tim
