Matching wheels

Has anyone thought of using a car or truck hub assembly to build an axle so that they can use matching wheels for their trailer?

When I put a new axle in last year I did think about it. I didn’t want to have to get bigger fenders and figure how to remount them.

It works fine as long as that tow vehicle and trailer stay together.

Our teardrop has matching wheels and tires to the truck. It works great as long as you like doing 7 tires when it's time to rotate. Also you can get trailer axles with almost any lug pattern to fit your wheels. Ours is 6 bolt Toyota pattern on our Dexter axle

Why is it I don't see the end of the hub sticking out from the wheel?

Because that wheel has a 1 inch spacer on it so I can keep my TRD center caps.

I should say where I saw the idea was on a Youtube channel "Dirt Lifestyle". The fellow used a Land rover rear axle with the axle ends cut and bolted back up to hold the unit bearing together. This setup gave him the bolt pattern he needed. Using a unit bearing would be slightly harder at the start but easier to fix on a lite trailer. Non drive unit bearings are crimped to hold together.

I went with wheels that match my 4runner when i built mine this winter, 32in tires on 17in rims.

Dexter has all sorts of options, like the 6 on 5.5 pattern hubs seen above. I did have to weld up custom fenders, but i was planning to anyways.
