angle iron cross members?

Postby fredo » Sat Aug 20, 2022 10:18 am

So looking at all the various trailer designs I am just gonna throw this out and see what others think:

5'X10' TD made from 2x2x.125 tubing for main rails and A frame construction with the same tubes for front and back ends and 1 at axle location, the remaining couple cross members I was thinking of 2X1 1/4X3/16 angle LLV for intermediate supports of floor. anything wrong with using angle at those locations? saves a little weight, dont need additional tabs at those locations to bolt floor. IDK, am I missing something by using the angle at those locations? I could go to an equal leg angle like a 2x2X3/16

thanks.

Angle is fine for cross members past the tongue member, but I might suggest 2" 1/8" angle.

I don't include a mid-cross-member since torsion axles act as one -- and my floors are stiff. I'd sure put one if I were using a standard spring axle. I place the rear cross-member at that location to support the battery and water jug.

I am planning on using the half axle flexiride so I thought a tube at that location would be a good spot for attachment of their plates as well as some strength. you are probably correct on the 2X2X1/8 angle for the other cross members - still lighter than the tube but stronger than what I was thinking.

* Original trailer frame needed a lot of work to begin with:

* I used 1/4" angle iron in two locations on my frame: first was as a "floor support/tongue tie-in" (making it connect to three crossmembers),

and the second use was as a "frame reinforcement/spring hanger attachment point" when I upgraded my original axle to a larger one.

* The original frame was way undersized, and needed a lot of modifications before campable (and lots later on). It's been rugged and durable for a long time now. More steel and thick plywood made it heavy, but tough.
