Question on frame dimensions

Hello I am new here. I have done a little searching but havent seem to found anything on the info I am looking for.
I am going to build my frame. I am wanting a 5x10 trailer. The questions that I have are what dimensions do I need to build the frame to be able to get a queen size mattress inside? I see that a queen size mattress is 60" wide. So would I need to add a few inches to the trailer frame width to put the walls on? Like 62 or 63 inches? Or if i made the frame to exactly 60 inches and put the walls up with say 1/8in or 1/4in skin on both sides with a 3/4 core will the mattress fit? Thank you in advance.

A queen fits fine inside our 60" (exterior) cabin. Inside it's 57-3/4" wide.



I rely heavily on Baltic birch plywood during a build and it comes in 60" widths.

There a lot of variables to consider.
What materials will you be using as a finish outer covering?
Aluminum can limit the exteriors final dimension.
Our TD is 60" x 120" and the walls overhang the chassis to hide it with 3/4 space in between.
The rear of the teardrop overhangs the chassis by 6" for the roll pans.
Our custom mattress is 58 1/4 x 80 ".
You need some wiggle room between the chassis and teardrop box to square things up and to run highway lights etc.
You might look into buying Tony's book to give you insight before ordering materials or look around at build topics to gather a plan.

Does your walls sit flush with the outside edge of your frame or do your walls come down over your frame to hide it?
Yeah i was looking at some of that 5ft wide birch plywood.

So your frame is exactly 60" wide and you had to get a custom cut mattress to fit in your camper?
I was wanting my exterior sheathing hang over the frame and hide it and have about a 1/8in gap between the 1/8" or 1/4" exterior sheathing and the frame. I havent made up my mind on the outer covering if it was going to be aluminum or filon. It depends what i can find in the size i would need because if i buld the frame to 60 inches and then the walls hang over then i would need something a little wider that 60" to cover the top.

My chassis is 57 1/2" wide x 96" to the tongue "Y" which when added totals more than 12 1/2 feet.
Remember it's 6" short at the rear to accommodate the roll pans.

Just as an FYI comment;
For those of you that might not know......a "queen" mattress is dependent on whether it's for a residence or an RV/camper. RV queen mattresses are slightly narrower and shorter than a residential 60" queen mattress.

Then, there are those of us who are paranoid about getting hit



We were, in fact, originally going to have the walls come down over the frame, but this seemed easier. We didn't change the height, but could have gotten another three inches from the 4x8 plywood.
