I went out one more time and set the fender, centered over the tire, and 1/2" below the frame. looks like the axle should go back that 2" that you first said...Boy! You're good!! 3"' may be better while we're at it!

No problem on the welding! If you want to commit to the move, maybe I'll get my son to help me flip the frame. I can move the axle. As you said, some grinding , that's it!
We can plan on that assembly weekend in a couple of weeks?? ;) ;)
Meanwhile, I have the info that I needed the fenders for, Axle placement and blocking to mount the fenders to.

So you are thinking Jan 29 or Feb 5th time frame, eh? Let me figure out which weekend works better... are you sure you'll be ready for that barn raising?

Mike...

P.S. The trailer is not heavy. I flipped it over all by myself!!! (although it's easier with 2 people)!!! :?

I don't remember which tire I put on it... Steve could probably let you know.

Teardrop "Barn" raising in New York. Last time was in NY was at the Worlds Fair 196?. Was only 10 or so, hummmmmmm reckon roads still go up that way? Got room for one more tear? The old man used to make it home by Sat morning after leaving work Fri. night, that was driving a 58 Pontiac. Course maybe that was why no one could stand to be around him! :?

Well, here's the latest on the lil'Diners..
I have the sides for Mike's camper, trimmed, roughed for electric, and insulated. I'll get the ply for the inside this week, along with material for the floor and bulkheads..Got to be ready for a "BARN" raising in FEB???
I think I heard someone say the weekend of the 19-20 or, 26-27 ?? Image
Roughed in for inside switches, left tube, and outside light, right tube.

Image
All insulated, ready for interior skin.

Image
Mike's street-side wall.

I spent some time grinding on Mike's frame, to remove and reposition the axle 3" aft to allow for those cool Grant Whipp fenders. I have one side to go!!
Image Remember, This frame was originally built for the weekender project? The welding should take 20 minutes or so.. The grinding...That's another story!!

Steve F,
That is beautiful plywood. Is it actually exterior, or Finnish Birch? Or are you figuring the glass will keep interior from delaminating?

I've been trying to understand the posts about cutting the ledge from the framing members & how you did it. I think I got the idea from your insulated wall picture above. Did you fasten the frame to the exterior wall before cutting out the offset, or did you cut it before mounting to the wall? Did you shape the frame using your template as a guide?

Man, that sure is going to be a beauty!
thanks,
Rod

It's actually, regular cabinet-grade birch from a good lumber yard. It becomes weather proof in the process of building the wall panel. The panel is clear-coated in epoxy and fiberglass, just like a wooden boat would be. Edges, if they are left exposed, are sealed in several coats of thin epoxy, then finished in spar varnish.

The framing is assembled on a jig, (I'm producing parts for two campers), then trimmed to shape with the pattern and a router. That ledge is cut with a pattern and a small router bit. Cut off section is used to fill in between roof struts. The frame is glued to the wall panel in a seperate step.

Well, The frame is back together, with the axle back 3". I also added some clips to bolt the body to.
Mike, What did you use for paint? I need to get some touchup! :?
I also skinned the window-wall interior today. The curbside will get done tomorrow.

Hey Steve,

I used some gloss black rustoleum. Shall I email you a quart? I'll bring it with me when I come in a few weeks. I might need a trailer to haul all the supplies we need for the cabin raising...

BTW, Frank is coming directly from SC, rather than swinging by MI first. Do you know of anyone else that is coming to your barn raising?

Mike...

P.S. Steve, you are an awsome builder. People should be knocking down your door to have you build a teardrop for them!!!

No worries! ;) I'm getting all of the sub-assemblies ready! We will be assembling as much of the shell as time will permit. The next step, after I get the walls ready, will be the floor, then the cabinet faces/bulkheads.
I'll e-mail you my phone numbers and directions from, say, RTE 81 in N.Y.??
It will be just Mike, you and me. We'll have a great time!! :P
Looking forward!

...I see what looks like a "Flexiride" axle, if so did you get it from etrailer parts(south west wheel), if it is a "Flexiride' and you got it elsewhere, would you care to post a link or location
