How To Best Attach 1/8 “ Bendable Plywood

Postby teardroptv » Fri Apr 08, 2022 3:07 pm

What is the best way to secure 1/8” bendable plywood to the spars? Should I use wood glue and a staple gun or wood screws. I would be very grateful for some guidance. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

It sort of depends how you are finishing over the wood. If it's getting covered with aluminum or something else, I always used a liquid nails glue and 5/8" coated staples. I always use 2 layers of 1/8th inch and stagger the seams over the first layer. I know some say one layer is enough, but for the little extra weight and expense I want a little extra security from a falling branch.

I use PL Premium adhesive and 1/4" crown staples. But that's for 1/8" Baltic over foam board too.

I agree with Woodbutcher on 2 layers of 1/8" plywood over lapping the first layer joints using staples.
I use Tightbond II and use a Bondo spreader to spread the glue in between layers.
I have actually stood on the roof of some of my teardrops.
It's like having a pre formed piece of 1/4" plywood for the roof, very strong.

You could do a lot worse than to use a good marine epoxy and fasten it with Raptor nails or staples — a nylon fiberglass composite. Once the epoxy has cured, the nails add no significant strength — they're there mostly to apply clamping pressure.

But, they can be cut with a saw or chisel, or sanded. They don't corrode. They're not susceptible to electrolysis. So, no need to remove the fasteners.

Popular for cold-molding boat hulls — what you're essentially doing with a teardrop and multiple layers of thin ply.

The drawback is they require a specialty pneumatic nail- or staple-gun.
