We have a Maxxfann, and basically ran it all last summer--almost 24/7. It was connected to a LiFePO4 battery connected to a solar charge controller, so I doubt the voltage fluctuated very much--but we had no issues. I do like the larger size of the cover compared to the Fantastic Fan, because I often left it slightly open in light rain and never had any water get through.

I've heard nothing but great things about the Fantastic Fan also, and I suspect you can't go wrong with either choice.

After too much research I bought the Maxx Air 00-07500K because it has 10 speeds and draws very little voltage on the lower speeds. Only con is the $335 price tag.

Speed -Amps -Watts
1. 0.25 A - 3 W
2. 0.35 A - 4.2 W
3. 0.5 A - 6 W
4. 0.75 A - 9 W
5. 1.0 A - 12 W
6. 1.5 A - 18 W
7. 2 A - 24 W
8. 2.5 A - 30 W
9. 3 A - 36 W
10. 4.2 A - 50 W

I just read on another forum site that the Maxx issues may to be related to using 12V rather than 110 shore power

I may have mis-read the post...it was actually :
"it seems to be isolated in folks use for van conversions which use ONLY 12V power systems w/batteries and solar panels. The MF fans seem to have no troubles when operated by 110V (shore power) applications"

I apologize if this misrepresented anything...I am not very savy regarding electricity.

I think I read somewhere that the MaxxFan cowl that prevents the rain from coming in can be put on other fan covers...it is a nice feature.

No problems! Just wanted to make sure no one burned out their fan "trying something". :)

So, from the way that reads, I wonder if, somehow, the problems came from the fan seeing the raw output from a solar panel, which might be 18 volts or so. I would think a good solar controller in between would prevent that.

We have one with our MaxxFan. Affects the ascetics--Looks a little bulky--but we haven't had a problem with the fan open even in hard rains.

Really nice looking! Thanks for sharing, I like the idea of having it cracked open for ventilation w/o worry of rain getting in.

On another note: I spoke with Nucamp today - they are the the original developers of my Yoder Toter back in 2006. They have used both Maxxair and FantasticFan in their Tabs and Tags. Currently using Maxxair and have not had any problems reported with the voltage. Maybe the issues has been fixed...

I replaced the 3sp controls in my fantastic fan with a PWM motor controller off ebay for about 5 bucks. I would bet that the same would possible with the maxair if the motor is designed for 12v.

I feel one can't have too much ventilation. A quiet fan makes more noise than I'd like. Have you considered installing another vent? More work and thought than a fan but probably nicer if you're as sensitive to noise as myself. I've had this idea about making a full width vent right above our heads. Now that's ventilation!

We have a Fantastic Fan housing with two 180mm Antec three speed case fans hooked in with a SPDT switch so one or both can be on. It is poised over the head of the bed and we seldom have them running on high speed. Quiet and low current use.

Hey yall. Not to derail. But I've got a camper that I would like to replace the fan with a roof mount AC unit. the question is can I just swap them (provided the fitment is good, which it is) or do I need to have both?

are there any reliable solar fan/vents out there? I'm looking to build a very minimal power-usage camper. I found a couple iffy ones on amazon

I don't know about a solar fan. What I do know, is that we always crack our Fantastic vent fan while we're in the teardrop. A half-inch if it's cold or full open if it's hot. Rarely do we need to turn the fan on.

My first teardrop had a computer fan that vented into the galley. There were two vents in the galley to move air. It was worthless.

At the minimum, install a 14" vent without a fan in the roof. I'd also recommend running a two-wire cable to the hole, in the event you decide to replace the vent with a vent fan.
