Howdy from Los Angeles

Postby APCROSS » Fri Jun 28, 2013 11:40 pm

I have a 1973 Twilight Bungalow teardrop that I purchased about 15 years ago. It had lots of wood rot which I fixed. And since then it has been parked in my brother's garage.

I bought her in Oklahoma City where I worked for a short amount of time, before moving to NYC.
I was there for a dozen years. Did lots of backpack camping in the Adirondacks, but the trailer stayed at my brother's the whole time. Never moved her to Manhattan. Hard enough to park a car on the street let alone a teardrop!

Now I live in Los Angeles and want to restore that little Bungalow to all her glory(though make her better because the original construction was shoddy.)

She is in Texas now, and not completely road worthy. I am debating about shipping her to LA to begin the restoration process, though I don't know how much that will cost. Ideas? My second option would be to fix her in Texas and find someone who would drive her from Fort Worth to Cali. I am not sure how much free time i will have to spend in Texas however. I have also debated about paying someone to fix her up inTexas, but this board has me all amped up to do the work myself. I am not exactly a handyman, though I did build my own bamboo fly rod once (in a week long class.)

I dream about using the Bungalow for fly fishing trips. i also have a five-year old daughter that I can't wait to take camping.

I don't have photos at the moment, but if you google Twilight Bungalow teardrop you will see what they look like.

I recently have become friends with a guy here who restores Airstreams for a living. That got me thinking that I could cover my 'drop with aluminum, but lately I have been thinking about going back to the original style siding that she came with. I am leaning towards that direction.

I will post photos as soon as I scan them. Looking forward to all of the insight, wisdom, and encouragement that this board has to offer!

Welcome to the forums.

If you are gonna keep it, original would be best. Most of that old aluminum siding styles can still be bought. If you sink a lot of money into it fixing her up, you might not get that back. But enjoying for what it was intended for would be nice.

As far as getting it to CA and the cost, I would not know where to begin. Pulling her your self would be better but Tags, title, wheels bearing, good tires, gas, and working lights all would be needed. Guess you have to weigh that against the price for someone to pick her up on a flat bed or a trailer.

GL is what you decide.

Hi Alan, welcome to the forum. If you are in the LA area in August, there is a teardrop and vintage trailer gathering up in our local mountains, at Hurkey Creek, on the 14th to the 18th. Check out the events in the South West section farther down on the home page, to get more info. Walk-ins are always welcome, and you will get a chance to meet a whole bunch of friendly teardrop folks. I'll look forward to meeting you.
