Newbie and bedding

Postby Goo » Wed Jul 31, 2013 10:37 am

Hello, my name is Julie and I have started building my first teardrop, along with my husband. I am the carpenter and he is the electrician/metal man. We live in the high desert of California, where we have four seasons. I go to bed every night thinking about the next day's procedure of the build, and it occurred to me, how and when do you put the mattress in there? I am building a 5x8, but a queen mattress is 60", a little wide for the 58 1/2" of the interior. Thanks everyone, I can't wait to peruse all the information in here, it is really going to be helpful.

We use a queen size memory foam mattress that can roll/fold up and fit through the doors on ours. We wanted to be able to take it out and keep it in the house instead of the basement garage where we keep the camper to avoid a musty basement smell and the occasional mouse.

FYI - I have seen a build somewhere on here where someone put a little hinged door the size of the mattress to allow you to slide it in and out for an actual mattress.

For ease of making up the bed you might want to concider a full rather than the queen. Remember you can use ALL of the bed without fear of falling out. The scant few inches between the mattress and the wall can store a few small things like slippers or an extra fleece throw if you get cold in the night. As to putting it in I slipped my pillow top serta in just before I closed off the roof. If you look close in this picture you will see the lexan roof is yet to be screwed down in front.

Thank you both for the info. I think I will go with the double bed option, and just slip it in before the roofing. And put a foam topper on top!

What I did was got some 4 inch foam from Joanns using the coupon and then a mattress topper and it works great.
