New guy from Las Vegas

Postby VegasNick » Sun Sep 22, 2013 7:49 pm

Hi there! I am sure that I may know some of you from the various off road and expedition forums. I joined up here because, well, it's time to get on with the build of our camper and I have been lurking here for two years almost gathering design ideas. I've had some major diversions and kinks in the plan along the way but now we're ready.

So on to the personal stuff. I am, among other things, an off road and ghost town enthusiast. I have had my photography and writing published in a hand full of magazines, most notably "Nevada!" magazine. I love the wild west and I am all about exploring and preserving its history along with teaching others the principles of "leave no trace". I am also a cancer survivor having just finished up my radiation and chemo treatments for Lymphoma. Believe me, if you ever really needed a reason to get out and enjoy life, just try sitting down with your wife (or husband) and making your own funeral plans and trying to help her figure out what to do when you are gone! Quite the sobering experience. In my day job I manage a fleet of 757's that primarily fly from Vegas and LAX to Hawaii. I used to fly helicopters in the law enforcement world and aside from that my background is in radio and electronics.

Here is my rig:

The trailer in this pic is what I will start my build with:

It's just about 2" shy of being 4ft wide and plenty long for my planned 4x8 setup. What I have in mind will be much like this build: viewtopic.php?f=50&t=57425 with the exception of a much beefier axle and an electrical system well and more finishing on the inside.

My wife had hated camping until a few years ago when I took her out to Cathedral Gorge NV. We were in the tent when one heck of a storm came up. Lightning, hail, wind like a mad banshee and all else that I would imagine would be wrong. I looked over at her on the bed and she was reading a book with a huge smile on her face and said "this is awesome, I love it"! So she's hooked! We both hate setting up the tent so here we are today about to start building a nice sleeping compartment for our camping trips.

Welcome. I envy the area you have to explore. I have a Wrangler but have to go hundreds of miles for great scenery and decent offroad trails. Enjoy your build and post up some pictures as you go.

Welcome to the Forum
The idea of building an off road "desert style" teardrop sounds exciting!
Good Luck with your build.
And if your wife loved the experience you described but hates set up and take down, she is going to LOVE Tear Drop Camping........Mine does!

Greetings and welcome.
I looked at various suspension options to make our tear a bit more off road ready and will eventually have a set of air shocks that will give us more ground clearance when needed (it is being re-engineered now).
