hello from Pa

Postby Jim91303 » Thu Dec 12, 2013 2:39 am

Hello my name is Jim
I'm a white water kayaker and avid hunter .... Looking to build my first camper .…. Getting tired of pitching a tent setting up camp that takes 30 minutes to put up / tear down between rivers ! For now my tow vehicle will be a 2002 dodge neon rated for 1500# max ..... Later it will be either a 2014 jeep or Sorrento . will be building a 8x8 Scotty with roof rack

What part of PA do you paddle from? I hate to admit, my liquid logic hasn't been wet for 3 years :(

Gerry .... I'm in south west pa ... Near Uniontown
I paddle the Yough river at ohiopyle ..... Come join me some time

I'm still in a planning and info stage of my scotty. I thought of the teardrop .... But not a fan of the outside galley. I am also planning to build a 20' camper later for me and the wife ... But for now just a small scotty for kayaking trips.
When I get started I'll post a build.
Going for function , light weight but yet try to still toss in some comforts .... Like heat/air, toilet , TV DVD player

You like whitewater then.....if you ever want to have some fun, in your teardropping around, if you get to northern Indiana the city of South Bend has a race (right on the St Joe River, right down town) called the east race of all things. It's been used for Olympic trials and training. We used to watch paddlers try to kill themselves all the time. It can be a little rough when the flow rate is high enough....

Personally, I like ocean kayaks, but I have been told the east race is just about as much a kayaker can have in their wet suits :)

Parks in the area are unremarkable. Potato Creek state park isn't bad....really nice bike trails etc. sadly northern Indiana is pretty flat (think pool table) but the south is quite nice.

I hope to bump into you at a gathering....we do it big here :)

Glad to see another newbie from Pa. My wife and I are heading down your way in May to cycle the GAP trail. I'm hoping that my build will be far enough along at that point that it will be usable, and we can avoid the tent and sleeping bags.
