Hello From Seattle

Postby ColbyDigsSoil » Mon May 26, 2014 6:37 pm

Hey everyone,

I'm new here. I've been lurking for a while so I could get some ideas for my daydreaming about building my own teardrop camper some day. I figured I might as well join the forum. I'm a "soil scientist", hence the "ColbyDigsSoil" handle. My wife an I just moved to the Seattle, WA area in January where I have a semi-temporary job here for a couple of years (a "postdoctoral researcher"). I moved from Raleigh, NC where I was in grad school (NC State, Go Wolfpack!) for 6 years. Prior to that I lived in Iowa where I was raised and went to college (ISU, Go Cyclones!). As you can see, I've lived all over, but my wife and I love to camp wherever and whenever we can.

I've enjoyed camping ever since I can remember. My family spent every vacation we ever took tent camping in northern Minnesota, the Black Hills in South Dakota, and as far west as Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons, or at the various campsites 20 mi away from my childhood home. When I was in high school I saw a documentary on TV about teardrop campers, and I've wanted to get one ever since. I come from a family of construction workers and farmers, so we're a pretty handy, DIY-type of family. Plus I'm cheap. Therefore, when I do get a teardrop camper it will be one I built myself.

I don't plan on building a camper any time in the immediate future. I don't have the space to build or store one at the moment, and my job is temporary by nature, so I'd like to wait until we settle down somewhere for good, and hopefully have a garage. I'd like to start building a teardrop camper in the next 5 years or so, but until then I just like to search online and pick up design ideas here are there.

I have a short list of things I plan to incorporate into the design of a teardrop camper some day. I like the looks of the woody teardrops - especially the wood strip/fiberglass/resin versions out there. My wife and I are both cyclists and we have two beagles, so we'd like to be able to leave the dogs in the teardrop unattended. Thus, we'll probably need to air condition it so the pooches don't get too hot in the summer. We also love to canoe, so I'll likely incorporate a roof rack for the bikes/canoe into my teardrop camper design. We'd like to have a queen size bed, plus room to store a good sized cooler in the bottom of the galley, so we'll likely go with a 5'x9' plan of some sort. We plan to have kids sometime in the near future as well, so we'll work out a camper/tent combination campsite when the time comes. Lastly, and possibly most importantly, I'm a homebrewer, so I plan to somehow make it possible to have 3 gallon kegs of homebrew on tap in the galley with the keg stored on dry ice in a cooler. This is a must-have for football/tailgating season.

Anyway, I enjoy your forum. Thanks for letting me borrow camper design ideas here and there from all of your creative teardrop campers.
