Hello, My name is Tom and I have a problem ...

There, took care of the main part in the heading.
As it says My name is Tom and I am new here. My family has been tent camping on our "inlaws and outlaws" camping trips for the past "bunch of" years and I thought it might be time to either buy something or build something. Well, as the header states, I have a few problems; I hate to spend money, and I LOVE to build "stuff". I want something light enough to be able to pull behind my 4 cyl. car so that rules out just about everything, but a teardrop. (and yes, I do realize there are a LOT of smaller pop-ups out there, but they all seem to cost $4K or so). I do have a daughter, but we could always kick out to the tent
Anyway, I already own a HF 4x8 folding trailer so that might be the start. I am also about to begin building a tow behind trailer for my motorcycle and was thinking that instead of using that ole boring car topper I bought to do it with, I might just build a smaller version of a teardrop for it. I'll be buying the HF 40x48 trailer for that project soon. I might use a teardrop design or I might just build a small aerodynamic (sort of) box to put on it - I haven't decided. I figured that either way I would end up with more than 28 cu. ft. of cargo space and wouldn't add too much weight by doing so.
I've built a couple of boats that still float and welded a go kart together that is still in one (or so) pieces :) so I do like my projects!
ANYWAY, so that's where I am at, so wish me luck.
Tom

Welcome!

Careful of the teardrop cost. They say a teardrop can cost $1500 for a bare bones shell. That is how they sucked me into this. Mine cost $4500 in materials all said and done, but it is much more than the minimum.

If you are interested in a tow behind motorcycle, check this one out. It is a beauty.

Wow! That's pretty impressive.
I was thinking more along the lines of a cargo type trailer though. I will say however, that I could easily see a small single person trailer coming out of it. There are a few examples I've seen floating around here. I'm not good enough to do an Airstream though!
Oh, and maybe a bit of that OOOOOOOOOOOOOO scary stuff - I ride a Honda ST1100 :D , but mine's Red :)

The one I posted is also a flat deck cargo trailer. The top comes off with just a few clamps. It really is some fantastic metal work.

Pics from his build log...

BASECAMP FINISHED :D
