Bow front teardrops

Postby new leaf » Sun Aug 31, 2014 5:27 pm

Hi all i'm Marcus from Auckland NZ.
I have been looking at these boards for a long time and am interested in the shape that looks like the Raindrop.
I have not seen to much on here with that type of front.

I hope you guys and girls :D can send some ideas my way.

I'm hoping to make a raindrop type of teardrop.

Thank you.

:D

There is more than one way to do the raindrop, some do a continuous curve, others have a more flattened front and the curve toward the side, a curved roof panel can make the very front corner look better. Then you will find the bowfront can throw off the tongue weight if you aren't carefull building and packing. There are many build threads for raindrop style tears now, they have the best collection of experience, remember the design is a newer idea, and possibly not fully worked out.

Hi Marcus and welcome to the forum. It is always good to have new members from NZ. Here's my $0.02. I like the shape and the aero affect but there will be some technical things I didn't want to overcome and could not live with. The flatter curve limits the "livable space" and is suitable for the galley but not the cabin. That shape in my cabin makes my neck hurt. If your galley is in the thin half/part, are you going to dance with your tongue while cooking or have a removable tongue? A fold-able tongue would be easier to build but would still be a shin bumper. I could not live with that. If the large radius is in the rear, where would your doors go as to not interfere with the fenders? Trailer stabilizers and levelers would be required on four points so set up could be more complicated and who wants that?. I think the first and most important rule holds true,"Whatever works for you". Just some thoughts.
Enjoy, Chris

most of us start with the trailer, unless you are a pro and can draw it all out and figure material weights ahead of time. You need to know the trailer dimensions then figure out how to connect the tear to the trailer. Even if you go the custom trailer route, you need to have a good idea of door and axle placement. A door forced to be out of the normal spot you sit in your bed at home, will cause aggravation, getting in and out of bed.
The other big issue is cabin width, 4 or 5 feet wide being the most common, with 5 the big favorite here. Sitting a 5 wide on a 4 wide trailer adds issues ( easy to overcome, mine is built this way) it is cheaper to get a used trailer ( old pop ups are a great source) then you know what you are building to fit, and you have a stable, portable, build area. ( getting a tear off or on the trailer is a pain, I did it solo, it wasn't easy!)

So Sorry Marcus, I confused designs of a raindrop with a reverse teardrop. Everything I suggested applies to the reverse tear and not the raindrop.
Enjoy, Chris
