goodevening tnttt
after a year or more of reading your wonderful site, I have decided to jump in the pool and trade ideas with you all directly..
(tyvm Mike).. I am a sr designer with more than 35 years on the job.. mostly aerospace..
I have been drawing since I was 10.. bought my first drafting table with paper route money..
I have learned so much from you all and I thought if I could I would offer any help I can... design/drawing wise..
I have never made a TD.. but I did work at JPL on the latest Mars rover...as well as NASA, Boeing, TRW, Hughes, Mc-Douglas...
A few of my hobbies (besides drawing) are woodworking, whitewater rafting, racing, and camping..(is wine a hobby or a habit?)
I would like to offer any help I can for anyone who has design/drafting needs..
If you think I can help your design in any way please just ask..
I draw on a very high end 3D solid modeling system and can send you PDF or JPEG or DWG files..
I have ten's of thousands of hours using the computer design tool...
My current TD/small trailer design is not the traditional shape as I hope to put a 12'6" raft on top to shuttle up and down rivers in the Rockies.. I also would like to use it as a stand to view the races I attend..
I come to your great site often for ideas and solutions.. each time, I am driven back to my own design to adjust it
with the knowledge you all have shared...thank you..
ps.. I am not a writer.. so if your the grammar police.. please go easy on me..

thanks for the welcome pchast..
by the looks of your photo album you are way past the drawing stage...
great looking rig... and that canoe was fantastic...
is there a text to go along with those photos?
was that canvas i saw you stretching out on that skin??

as for the design help... a few lines on the page should never keep a good idea down.. there are thousands of good ideas here..
and for some people...its getting a few lines on the page that stop them.. in that.. I'd be glad to help...

Do you ever draw cars?
I am planning a new Td as a follow up to Miss Piggy!
Have it pictured in my head already!!

yes, for GM and Ford... mostly GM... frames, suspensions, motor n trans install...
and the toughest thing I have ever drawn.... rubber door moldings...
rubber will move in any direction at any thickness at any time... not like bending metal..
and computers like a X,Yand Z numbered approach.. rubber flows..
your not putting your beauty Ms Piggy out to pasture are ya??..

Hey, welcome! Do you have any interest in, or the capability of doing CFD for people? I think that is a primary interest that is simply beyond the skill of most hobbyists, but applies uniquely to the teardrop crowd. Having that data for certain builds or profiles and sizes might help people make more informed decisions.

Yeah, CFD for aero so we could estimate Fd for a various shape and size of teardrop. I wasn't sure if that was within your normal range of 3D solids modeling work in aerospace, or how time consuming that sort of thing is. There are a lot of variables for an accurate prediction with CFD with a total package of vehicle + trailer + tongue length + undertray, lift etc --, but you could perhaps just compare relative merits of design given a simplified parameters of a free standing half body with a simple boundary setup and no axles or space between the object and the slip wall... I have no experience in such matters, but always wanted the data, or at least some reference point for shapes and designs.

brycelowe was talking about flow simulation in Solidworks last year:

http://www.tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=56396

Because I deal in furniture and CDF isn't to important I didn't buy that module of the software, but Bryce still may be using it.

g2m, can you save to a 3d PDF from your NX software. It may be more accessible to other forum members instead of STEP or IGES and CAD viewers.

NX does flow.. As mike46 was saying I am not sure I have that module available to me here...
I will check and report back...

I was thinking about trading 3D files with those of you who have that capabilities...
your PDF file didn't open well for me here... so I thought if we could send 3D files
it would be faster..
those without a 3D modeling system would need a JPEG of a drawing or a PDF like you were saying..
(I have never made a 3D PDF file.. everyone I know has a modeling program.. but I could try.. )

g2m, could you clarify "didn't open well". I know they are not great models, but were you able to view and rotate the trailer?

my computer uses Nuance PDF program... it would not open your file properly.. so I saw nothing...
I could try again and look for a different PDF reader..
but I have 3D modeling.. so I was wondering if we could post a STEP file... or IGES.
I am new here so I don't know if we can post a attachment file.. I'm learning...
I'll try and attach a test part from McMaster Carr...
please let me know if it works on your end.. cheers

update...that did not work... this site will not accept a STP file...
so lets try a PRT file...
nope.. this site will not accept a PRT file either...
I guess we would have to send those type files from a email client...
unless someone knows a tip or trick for it to work..??

g2m, In case you missed it there, I wrote in my post:

"I'm not sure about a place to post files on the TNTTT site, I think we may be better off hosting them somewhere else and link to them, the 3D files can get large and it would save the site bandwidth. I did that with the 3D PDF I linked to above, It's on my Google drive. Has anybody downloaded and viewed it, I had no problem getting it to work. I use this PDF feature quite often when a client wants to get a better look at a new design."

I'll create a IGES and post a link in my thread, keep an eye out for it there.
