Newbie from Sleepy Hollow IL

Hello everyone, I hope you are all happy with yourselves! After watching from a distance for several years I have now caught the Teardrop bug :)

We have been camping for years and have moved through several trailers, all of which worked for us at different times in our family's growth and goals. Now we have a larger camper and older kids but with 10 and 13 year old daughters at home I find myself wanting to get out with just them. While I can manage the big trailer on my own - I DO NOT enjoy taking it out without my husband along. My girls adore the teardrop style and if it happens that all 3 of us are along than I guess mom will sleep in a spare tent - if not than a teardrop will be perfect for two us.

So before I jump into just buying a teardrop I am going to investigate the option of building one. (I have MANY reservations and I hate starting projects that I don't finish!) Even so, I think this will be a GREAT opportunity to teach my girls about proper use of power tools, building materials, and self-reliance. I am viewing this more as a marathon than a sprint and my plan is to start off this winter with a low financial investment and begin by building bird houses with them. From there we can select a few larger projects next spring and if we find that we have developed the knowledge, endurance and resources we will kick off our build next July.

I love this sight and all of the wonderful information - thanks to everyone that has posted - it will help us gather the details we need to be successful.

Welcome Ruth, You sound like you have a good plan. Nothing better then getting the kids out camping when they are young. Holler if you need any help and look into coming to one of our gatherings. Check out the (Midwest section here and the Land of Lincoln on Tear Jerkers) . No need to have a teardrop to attend. There is no better way to decide what to buy or build. After seeing what everyone uses and how they built them you should have an easier time deciding what to do.

Thanks! We will be camping in Wisc during the next gathering, but I will be sure to catch one in the spring.
