Hello From SE Texas

Postby cbgaloot » Mon May 11, 2015 8:33 pm

I hate these introductions. Never know what to say.

Male age 58, married.
Navy Veteran, Tin Can Sailor, Shellback and Son of Neptune. Was a Boiler Tech, then a Firecontrolman. (Firecontrolman work on gun and missile guidance radars, and we shoot the guns and launch the missiles)
Too fat
Somewhere between an Old Hippy , and Long Haired Country Boy at heart.
Gun lover, knife lover, CHL, Patriot.
Pretty good with tools. One of my hobbies is woodworking. Trying to learn leather working.

Used to camp a lot. Want to start camping a lot again. Too old and fat to sleep on the ground.
Contemplating building a small camper. Maybe a Teardrop. maybe just a small camper. WILL have air conditioning.
Want a sort of camping support vehicle. Camping is about being outside. Bathing and sleeping are about all that will happen inside.

My main questions of the moment are about the frame/chassis. Considering finding an old camper that is trashed and use the frame and axle from that.

Glad to be here. been lurking a while. Seems like a pretty friendly and informative bunch here.

Welcome aboard cbgaloot, you are on the right site to gather any and all info. What town are you from in SE Texas? I've got an Aunt and Uncle in New Summerfield. I know Texas is big but you might be neighbors and not even no it. Good luck on the build,....... and yes it's nice to not have to sleep on the ground like a dog! :D
I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction, the world will have a generation of idiot's.

Welcome aboard, cbgaloot.........Lotta good stuff & good people here. If you've lurked awhile (like most of us newbies), you know that there is a huge wealth of info to be had. Sometimes it comes right to you in reply to a query, and sometimes you have to run down many threads. But it's all here somewhere. Ask questions,(no such thing as a dumb one, and all here respect that premise) and keep a-hunting.......doug

Welcome to the second friendliest place on earth!
Well you have all of the right credentials to be a Teardrop Camper.
If you like to travel? Then you will want to make sure you have a sound chassis with a torsion ride suspension and 14" or 15" wheels. An make sure you go 5' wide if you plan to camp and travel with your wife!
Another suggestion would be to check out the Buy and Sell here on the Forum.
Right now there are a few good buys there.
Parts and materials cost money! And sometimes finding someone else's abandoned project that that is along the lines of what you have in your head can save you money.
Good Luck with whatever you decide, and we look forward to you becoming part of this great way of life.

Thanks for all the welcomes.

Spent some time just browsing about last night. Only been lurking a couple of days, so there's much I have not found yet.

My mind is awhirl with new possibilities.

I see now that starting with a salvaged camper frame is not an insane idea. (Or at least I'm not the only insane person to come up with the idea.)

Never heard of foamies until yesterday. Very interesting.

The generic Standie looks like the way I want to go.
