Newbie from St. Louie

Actually we St. Louisans never call it "St. Louie", but I couldn't pass up the bad ryhme. :)

Married 32 years with two grown boys. Wife went tent camping once and said, "Never again." She's very picky about comfort...especially for sleep. Boys and I camped till they reached that age where they prefered doing things with people their own age. Thinking about trying to get the wife interested again and started looking at various rv options, but they were all too expensive. I was about to give up, and then...

We were watching a show called "Home Free". Wife saw the teardrops the contestants were living in while rehabbing houses and said, "Those look really cozy. We should get one of those."

Thus began the mad research that landed me here. Just in the thinking stage at this point. A lot has to happen before I can even begin building. Live in a tight neighborhood in the city... no garage...not even a driveway. :NC Going to need to concrete a section of the backyard to build and store. Probably won't happen till spring at this point.

Have been reading the site and making notes for about a month now. Really appreciate all the friendly info and complete lack of drama on here.

Little more about myself: Biggest past hobby is rc planes. I see several on here with that interest. I got in early on the electric scene. Discovered blue fanfold foam and went crazy with it for years helping others discover how inexpensive and useful it is. In fact, one of my handles is "bluefoamfanatic". This, of course, led me to the foamie section, and I plan for mine to be at least a hybrid if not a full fledged foamie. Wife will have opinions about the interior at least.

Anyway, glad to find you all, and the help I have already received. Looking forward to the adventure. :wine:

Welcome to the forum :D My wife is very much into comfort and against tent camping as well. I had pretty much resigned myself to solo camping until I came across the tears. The wife is actually agreeable to sleeping in one, and has decided it would be handy for visiting family out of state. Anything that means lower cost to take trips appeals to her, lol. My other big selling point was that I wouldn't have to sleep in my car when I made the quarterly trip to the VA, seems their lodging is always full well before I have an appointment date.
I tinkered with rc planes a little, but mostly stuck with boats and 1/10 buggies. For the boats we often used foam, so I am also looking to go either full foam or more likely a hybrid. Gonna have to wait for spring though, wife got a new car today so any chance at claiming the garage just went out the window. Guess I will just have to try and rent some shop space somewhere since our HOA would have a cow if I built my TD on the patio or in the driveway. I will worry about where to store it when I get it built :FNP

I'm thinking a 5 wide for sure. Want to get close to a queen bed...part of wifey comfort. :)

Length will be 8 to 9. Probably will end up on the Harbor Freight 4x8.

I used a HF super duly trailer (4'wide) and made a 5 wide foamy hybrid(frp-foam-canvas) The floor is just canvas with 2" foam and frp on top. The walls are frp glued with 3M contact cement to 1" foam and canvas on the inside. The roof is the reverse of the walls with Canvas on the outside All put together with polyurethane chalk. I made fender wells out of a plastic feed trough. But if I did it again I would use 5' angle iron under the frame.and mount the spring channels on them. Cut axle and weld a tube over it Just some things to think about.
