My wife and I lived and cruised aboard our 50' Gulfstar sailboat for more than 25,000 miles and 12 years. We've sold the boat and purchased a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon. Bert Taylor in Minnessota is building a 'Vistibule' teardrop which we will take delivery on in April 2016. We're now in the process of the upgrades we wish to have on the Vistibule. Bert has worked out an off road package & using my 'off-grid' electrical experience on our cruising sailboat have worked out what we think is a good electrical system which includes a sine-wave inverter, lithion ion batteries and a 100 watt fixed mounted solar panel.
So far so good. Looking forward to a fun land cruising experience.

We're X long distance sailboat cruisers logging more than 25,000 miles under the keel. After 13 years the 24/7 routine became just too much. On multi day passages someone always had to be in the cockpit and we took 3 hour watches. Even at anchor we had to be ready to head to sea even if it was 3AM. We miss it but using our experience of 'self accountability' the Jeep/teardrop idea appealed to us. Our idea is to camp mostly in the California dessert (we had the Vistabule teardrop set up for off-roading) and play in the dirt with the Jeep Rubicon.
It's all new but fun!
