Hello from far northern Minnesota

Postby n0ukf » Wed Apr 27, 2016 1:38 pm

I've had a little interest for a while in possibly building a TD to pull behind my motorcycle. At one time my brother suggested a MC road trip around Lake of the Woods, tenting 1-2 nights, but right now it looks like we may never get around to doing that.

While we have camped in tents over the decades, it's nicer to have a hard roof, floor and walls to protect you from the elements.

Welcome to the forum! I agree! I was a long time tent camper and really love being off the ground in a hard shell! Those skunks sniffing around started to get to me.

Enjoy!

Hi n0ukf , welcome to the Forum from a central Minnesotan... :)

If one enjoys camping, the means is never a problem and I completely understand the time and build... I ended up going from tent to back of an old K5 Blazer (Tight to say the least) to a custom built Cargo Conversion and the FunFinder when long trips or more comfort is desired... :D

We spent a week in your neck of the woods, no pun intended, last year... We spent the first night in Grand Marais and then headed to the "Trails End" for a few days, before working our way back home... Beautiful place... 8) 8)

We will enjoy hearing more about your build, buy, or, whatever you camp in, but I agree, a hard side is really nice... camp is set up when you get there and the roof is solid when the weather turns sour... Good luck on your choice...  :pictures: :pictures:
Happy Camping & Building,
John (JC)

This TD would probly work for you.
http://www.angib.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/t ... tear58.htm
May be able to put it on this HF trailer
http://www.harborfreight.com/1090-lb-ca ... 62645.html
or
http://www.harborfreight.com/870-lb-cap ... 62646.html
and do it out of 1" or1-1/5 foam with 2" foam floor and canvas. :D
A twin mattress is 38" wide so with 1" walls it would work.
If you want a 40" inside width You could extend the floor past the trailer the width of the wall and cut out for the wheel then glue in a piece of 1/8 plastic(FRP) inside the hole.

Welcome from west central Minnesota!
Sleeping off the ground with a hard cover over your head is a great way to camp. There's lots of ideas on this forum for basic to fancy teardrops. Mine tended toward the basic side.
We have a pretty active MN/WI group. Be sure to check out the St. Croix Chapter page on this forum and on the tearjerkers forum. I seem to be the farthest one out since most hail from around the Metro area, so most of the gatherings are on the eastern side of the state. If you would like to check out some teardrops (homemade or commercially built) and are up for a long drive, there's a gathering coming up in June at Willow River State Park by Hudson, WI.
Take care,
Lil M.
