newbie from Britain

Postby cbreddie » Thu Aug 01, 2024 3:44 pm

Hi, I'm Eddie, I live with my wife Donna and my dog Poppy.

We are planning our camper trailer which we intend to build in spring next year, I'm looking for ideas and inspiration.
I like the traditional teardrop shape whilst my wife prefers a more modern square shape.
I am a joiner and kitchen fitter by trade so I've wanted to build a teardrop for quite a few years to challenge myself.

We have a trailer to use as a base, and because its unbraked the whole build must be under 700kg unladen. So weight is my biggest enemy.

I welcome any advice and tips. Many thanks in advance

Classic teardrop hatches rest on the walls when closed. When open, the rear doors of flatback campers just hang, and the weight is cantilevered, putting a lot of stress on the walls. Something to think about.

But good luck with your dreaming. :applause:

A tear can be built much lighter than you think. Think airplane, not tank.

Think outside your "finish carpentry" comfort zone and consider building a monocoque structure using rigid foam insulation. You could easily be under 400kg.

Thanks for the welcome guys, with reference to the rear doors/ hatch resting on the frame, this is a good point which I hadn't considered.

With reference to building a foamy, I had considered doing this, but I also fancy challenging my joinery skills. I am definitely not ruling it out, I just need to find a suitable product (which I am struggling with).

Think fine, lightweight boat building that highlights craftsmenship... With your carpentry and cabinet making skills, you might want to consider this tear drop design:

you probably could just get the plans and source the materials yourself.
