Building Teardrop

Postby dwe » Wed Apr 04, 2007 5:11 pm

Hello All

I am in Sheboygan, WI. and started building a teardrop a few months ago. It is 5'wide and 8' long. I have the sides done and installed. I am now starting on the inside top and the outside top. I have one question. I am going to put aluminum on the top only, the sides are stained and varnished. I will be attaching the aluminum sheet with a strip of aluminum on each side and the front and back. Do I have to glue it down somehow, and with what?

Your Help will be appreciated
Thank You
Dennis

Dennis...welcome aboard...since Rob already asked for pics, I'll pass on askin' for now...some assumptions...ya doin' woodie side, how are ya finishing them...epoxy...????...what kind of top corner trim...or any trim at all...a quick couple of thought...float the AL...no adhesive...seal the trim(which holds the al sheet in place) with a urethane adhesive/sealant...(think auto windshield adhesive/sealant)

...now...ya got any pics of this beauty we take a gander at...we do luv da pics around here...doanchano :D ;)

Welcome Dennis. You are at least the third teardrop being built in Sheboygan. I have been working on mine on and off for about 13 months now. Let me know if you want to share ideas anytime. I also should let you know about "Cooler Near The Lake", a camp out in Racine the end of this month.

Thanks for your help. I have stained birch plywood sides covered with about 10 coats of outdoor varnish. The wheels of the trailer have to be moved but I will do that after I am done so I can get the correct tongue weight. I don't have any plans. I am going off of pictures I have seen on the internet. I am wireing it for 12 V and convert 12 to 110V. I will be using a solar panel to keep the battery charged.

Hi DWE,
Here's some good tips I got from www.teardropparts.com:
Use GE Silicone II under your moldings for a good long lasting seal.
Cleaning the aluminum:
!. Wash with soap & water.
2. Wipe down with lacquer thinner.
3. Wipe down again with mineral spirits.
4. Buff it out.
