Near Rochester, NY

Looking into solutions to getting too old to sleep on the ground but not wanting to spend lots on gas. That leaves out the big self contained stuff. Besides, the oldest kid just left for college and the youngest is 4 years behind him. Going to be just the wife, the beagle, and me real soon. I am sure that I can build one of these having done a few cedar strip canoes, a S&G kayak, and quite a few things around the house.

The pickup went on Craigs List today and the mini van is getting a bit on the old side so I want to pull with the other car. My getting to work car is a 2005 Hyundai Elantra with a 5 speed. The tow ratings on these are not realistic (3000 pounds or so) but I am guessing that if I am in the 600-800 pound range it will work out. Does this seem reasonable?

If there are teardrops around Rochester that I could take a look at for ideas and to get a sense of size I would appreciate a pointer. I am actually located in Retsof which is near Geneseo.

Now I am going to go into lurk mode for a few months and do a bit of listening and learning.

Dave-

Get in touch with Ray Finney, he is in Syracuse.

He could also tell you of other TD's in NY and gatherings!

Hi, Dave...I'm in Syracuse. I know it's a bit of a haul for a day trip, but if you're up for it, several central New Yorkers are gathering this weekend at Nick's Lake Campground near Old Forge. I was supposed to be there, too, but am stuck home with a bad back (great meds though..)

Anyway, I know there are at least a half dozen people camping there this weekend, so if you do have time to visit, at least a couple folks had indicated they'd be there until Monday and you could see some homebuilt, purchased and personalized.
Here's the thread with information:
http://tnttt.com/viewto ... sc&start=0

There are a couple of people near Rochester with tears and small trailers, at couple of people in Syracuse, several folks in Ontario and up north, at least one person near Brockport, and Steve Frederick (of the amazing shop manual) is in Broadalbin, near Albany. Hope this helps.

Hey Dave,

Welcome to the forum. I'm sure somewhere on this board there are some lighter weight trailers. If you would go down into "General Discussion" or " Teardrop Construction Tips & Techniques" and ask that question, I'm sure someone or many someones, could help you out.

Anyway, hope you enjoy your stay and do a little posting while you are in lurk mode and you will have fun. And when you finally start your build, just be sure and post lots of pictures. :D

Image to the playground Dave. 3000 pounds would be a lot for a teardrop. No doubt they can be built a lot lighter.

Lurk mode won't help ya know! Ya gotta get in there and do some proactive planing. 8) ;)

Enjoy!

Thanks for all of the welcomes.

I am guessing that if I tried to pull 3000 with the thing I would get to try out the 100k mile warranty :-). I will be watching and planning.

You Damn Yankees, frightened to pull a bit of weight.

:designing:

In my previous guises I had a Business named Tommos Towbars. Obviously supplying and fitting towbars to motor vehicles (you blokes call them hitches i think).

Not too sure about the Elantra but equating it with other similar cars the max tow weight would be 1200Kg but this would be with trailer brakes, traffic Regs in Queensland Australia allow a max towing weight of 750Kg, most TD should come in under this weight.

I own a Mazda Bravo ute (Ford Ranger) 2600cc Auto and have no trouble in pulling 2000Kg with it, this is it's max towing capacity.

So be brave and go for it stay below 1000Kg and you should have no troubles

Ron (Tommo)

PS 2.2Lbs to the Kg

PPS Bill when did Florida take over Fromqld as The Sunshine State 8)

However our licence plates now have the statrment The Smart State :R

Mine only had 2300cc but I probably hauled and towed more than it was rated for.
