Can someone point me in the right direction ????

Greetings everyone,

Let me say you guys and gals are a pretty talented and motivated bunch.

I am very interested in building a five foot wide tear but as you all know unless you spend 500.00 you can not get a five foot wide trailer. I was thinking what about the old pickup camper style that sits in a four foot wide box and hangs over the sides of a landscape trailer rails a bit. It would be easy enough to build a base for such a beast that could offer storage compartments. In addition ideally the camper should be removable so that the trailer could be used to go fetch things as needed just like the pick up camper does.

Has anyone one taken such an approach before ?

You can get a Harbor Freight trailer that id 4 feet wide and build your floor 6 inches wider on each side. Piece of cake and way under 500 bucks

Tmaken,

You didn't specify your profile, in particular, if you want your wheels outboard of the body, or tucked underneath.

If you want to tuck them underneath, you can use a HF 4x8, like this...

If you want the wheels outboard, then a 5x8 is in order, and you will have to spend about $500. The only way around it is to fabricate one yourself.

Thanks for the replies, I have been to red trailer and I have not seen a 5 by 8 available today for way less than 500 "delivered"

I saw the fellow that made the zephyr and that hung over the sides which I invision my concept doing as well, but I really would like tires larger than 8 inches and I have 1.8liter corolla as a tow vehicle. I used it to pull a smallboat from main to ny and got 32 mpg

I was just hoping to find a design that uses a landscape trailer with the sides intact that I could study. Although the axel placement may not be ideal the down low storage opens up quite a few possibilities.

Please let me know if there is one outthere, but starting formscratch never stopped me before. I'll keep you all apprised of the build.

tmaken2157, Just checked redtrailers myself, I see the price has gone up scence I bought mine. But if you cant find any where else, You sure cant go wrong with their customer service. And if anyone else is interested redstrailers now has what they call "Teardrop" trailer chassis. Look the same as their other trailers, just not foldable. But they do have a 5X10.

Hi and welcome :D

You would be surprise to see how much good stuff people throw away, go around your hood and spot those thing that been sitting, lots of people will be glad to give them to you as they do not want to pay the garbageyard fee, also look for garage sale, craiglist, put an ad stating what you need.

best of all you will not pay tax and help the planet recover.

Mostly, you effort are needed in achieving your goals not $, if of course you have time, we call it teardrop time around here.

good luck. :) :) :)

my dream belong to you and them

I built mine on a 4x8 no floor from Tractor Supplies $290. Built it 5' wide 8' long 5' high. Pull it with my Corolla 1.8 liter and get 25 mpg.
