my names phil, sorry dont have a pic at presnt, but il work on it, im 27, which seems to make me a bit junior on here, the other website i go to regularly makes me feel like an old joker, so itl be a welcome change.

well, a couple of days ago i came across this listing on our local ebay equivilent, trademe.

i had been looking at buying and remodeling a caravan, or just building one off the base of a trailer, when i saw those lil teardrops my first thoughts were along the lines of 'silly little baby caravan' but before i had finished browsing those pix above i had decided that a teardrop is want i want to own.

im currently rebuilding a '73 valiant ranger and the oldchool design would look great with it (i had ideas of getting a valiant caravan to go with it, would have been the right era also)

my secondary thoughts about the teardrop is that it looks superficially like the back end of a VW... has anyone ever made a teardrop from a wrecked beetle? id love to do it, but it might be a bit much of an ask for me at this stage.

so i spent a good few hours reseraching the teardrop(and the VW beetle) last night, and ive decided to start a build as soon as my valiant is ready to tow it... i cant wait... hopefully by the begging of next summer it will be done(my summer is your northern winter i.e. its summer here now) i came across this site when looking up plans, and it seems to be a very good resource people with lots of helpful and friendly types so cheers all.

Welcome aboard Phil....doesn't matter what you build from or what your design is. Me personally, I love to see more off the wall stuff, ie, from a V-Dub. Most importantly, have fun with your build and I'm sure you are going to be reminded about the fact that you need to put up some pictures. You're in good company here, you're only limited by your imagination. We have several members from below the equator. Just remember to design your sink so that the water rotates the "correct" direction!!! Doug

Hi Phil,

Welcome to the forum. I think a teardrop made from a VW Beetle would be very innovative and very cool. I love it when someone comes up with a new design and brings it to reality. I will be watching for pictures, which keeps everyones bubble oil level. So good luck and get to making sawdust or metal dust....whichever.

yeh i dont think il make my first one from a veedub, i dont weld, so until i learn il wont get into that, i plan to build my teardrop on the back of a small trailer, i already have a few other unusual ideas, so we'll see how it turns out.. im not planning to start for a bit, altho i wish i could, its good to get going when all the enthusiasm is there...

might do some drawings on mspaint tho, il post them up for critique when i do.

another kiwi here im from Christchurch
starting my teardrop this weekend hopefully just got all the steel and axles etc cost so far $450.00
still got to work out how to post pics BUT i am going to be taking a heap of pics
Worked out the size of it 1500mm wide, 2400mm long without drawbar
and 1200mm without wheels
i was going to make it 1200mm wide but it felt too small
