First time builder from Estes Park

Postby EPGregg » Mon Jul 14, 2008 4:09 pm

Hi everyone,

My name is Gregg Yarrow and I’ve been gathering information here for a month or two. After a couple of false starts, like ordering a frame from Northern tool with a 6-8 day shipping date that turned out to be 8-10 weeks. I finally found someone to build me a frame that I hope I’ll be happy with. It’s 5X8, 14’ wheels, torsion axel, has a receiver on the back for a hitch haul/bike rack, tongue to accommodate a storage box, and loops on the frame to secure a cover and/or cable lock. Most are ideas I picked up on the forum, so thanks for the help so far. I’ll post pictures as soon as I can figure out the system.

I’m still deciding on a profile, finish etc. I’d like to do something along the lines of a woody but since I live at 8,000 feet I have to deal with UV problems and pretty big temperature fluctuations.

Thanks for all the help so far.

Gregg. welcome to the forum, hope you get all of the answers you are looking for. Ah yes, Estes Park, the land of the never-summer mountains. 8000 feet, that's getting up there. Now a woody is a fine idea, especially if you have a place to store it inside during the snow and rain seasons. My woody is almost 6 years old, and with a bit of varnish every year, is holding up fine. Good luck on your build. Take pics and post em.........we love pics. (just ask Aunti M)

Welcome Gregg...I spent 3 of the most wonderful years of my life, right across the mts from ya, living at Grand Lake...for a woody, an epoxy finish covered with auto clearcoat is hard to beat...have fun and don't forget the pics...don't even have to be of the build...the mountains will do nicely

I'm relatively new to the area, I've lived in the Deep South most of my life so I couldn't tell you what works for shure. You could do woody sides and an aluminum roof.

Thanks for the welcome

Thanks for the welcome. I believe I'll go with at least a CPES foundation. I've thought about an "floating" an aluminum roof, possibly as an addition later in the build.

Madjack:

I've never tried to apply clear coat. I do have a small pancake compressor. Is it reasonably forgiving, or would it take a body shop.

Grand Lake is a great place. In fact I'll be going over there soon do do some work on my aunt's cabin (on the Colorado River just upstream from the main road into town). Keep your fond memories of the beautiful green forest. It's nearly all gone now due to beatle infestation. All you see is ugly rusty redish brown trees.....

Hi Gregg! Welcome to the family. We live in OK. but have spent a lot of vacations in your area. We do love CO. As a matter of fact we will be up there in about 2 weeks. In Aug. we come to Copper Mountain for a MINI Cooper get together. We stay there at night but take tours out to different areas during the daytime. I know one of the tours comes to Estes Park. You might see us driving around town. The TearDrop is perfect for pulling behind the MINI and there were 4 on display last year at the gathering. (All belonging to MINI owners).

Good luck on your build. I know you will be happy knowing you built it, a real feeling of pride. Keep us updated.
