Well, I started building today.

Postby joycecporter » Sat Feb 02, 2008 8:07 pm

I woke up this morning, and told myself, today is the day. I called my friends at the lumber yard and had them deliver my material. I'm gonna build a 4 X 8 and if I enjoy this kind of camping, I'm thinking I will do a larger one from marine board from that place I've read about on hear. So, anyway, from my cardboard model to the real thing. Did some major work today, but already need changes, so I'm sure this is just the beginning of many to build. This was really lots of fun. You guys got me thinking I can do it! Thanks.

Good for you Joyce. Good luck on the build. If you hurry you can make the Lake of the Ozarks gathering at the end of the month. Just kidding about being done that soon. It's been done before but not easy. Be sure to come to the gathering to visit and get ideas though.

Remember my motto "They aren't mistakes, they are only oppertunities for unplanned and novel changes to the original plan.!" As somebody here likes to point out, (and I honestly can't recall who it is), "Don't make it more complicated than it has to be... what you are really building is a big box with a little box in the back."

My woodworking skills were pretty weak when I started out, but by taking my time, looking at each piece, figuring out what I was trying to do, and then maybe doing a practice piece or two before doing the real McCoy, I'm building something that I can be fairly happy with. You will be surprized at how much you will learn to trust your skills as they start to build.

Keep up the good work, take lots of pics, and don't work in a hurry. Most of my problems have occured when I've felt RUSHED to get something done.

Joyce, you have the spunk, the personal design talent and drive to build this little teardrop trailer. If you consider yourself nuts, for building cardboard models, I guess I fit the bill, and have about a dozen different cardboard designs that somehow appear in my mind. Be sure to keep in touch with the board, because there is no question that is too difficult for these experienced builders to answer.

Lets see, I can just see the reaction of your camping neighbors when they ask the question, "Hi there, where did you get such a cute little trailer". Then out jumps an 8 year old and proudly explains that my Mom and I built it all by ourselves"! How great is that? Good luck on your efforts, do take pics, post em and if you think that the folks on the board are friendly, just wait until you go to a gathering and find out how wonderful the teardrop enthusiasts are. Just you wait!

Roly, (just an old retired teardrop builder/user that is a grouch while camping and doesn't want to be bothered by those that want a tour and a story about how it all transpired).............NOT!!! ;)

1st campout, other than our driveway!

Postby joycecporter » Thu Aug 21, 2008 2:57 pm

Well, we did it, we finally got away for the weekend to camp in our "Peanut". We had a few people that stopped by and wanted to check it out while we were at the campground. And the best part about it was that I could say that "My son and I built it".

We had to stop and get gas on the way home, and the gas station, well again, a few people came over and we opened it up for them to take a look.

The convertible top was great.

This Friday night, we are off for another campout.

Thanks for all the encouragement from y'all.

Love the door lock issue.  Do you have a screen on the top when it is open? What a great idea. Did it try to fly up?

Yes, when I roll back the vinyl top, it is screened in. The type of snap-its that are on there are virtually impossible to let it fly off.

Yeah, that door lock was a major pain in the backside. My cordless drill when dead while I was installing it, no biggie, go to the neighbor down the road and borrow one, right... Yeah, did that, it was dead too.
I was determined to put that lock on, and only had a little bit to go.
So, I had to make do.... A cresent wrench and drill bit. It worked.

Can't wait to meet some of ya.

Any Missouri campouts left this year?

Great looking tear Joyce.
Don't know of any gatherings in MO this year but there is one in east KS just south of Fort Scott the first weekend in Oct.

http://tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?t=25294

Here's the link to it in the north central area. If you can't make it there might be something that gets going on the spere of the moment. This one only started about a week ago. Some friend and us have talk of going to Nob Noster later in the fall.

Where are you in MO. I would really love to see the vinyl and snaps. It will be cold by the end of Oct. That is when you spend your Christmas money getting to Louisiana. 8) That is if you have any left.

Come see us at Crawford Lake in KS if you can.
