Seriously Considering a build

Greetings all. There is great info on this site.

I usually sail, but I am suffering a temporary exile from my usual Tampa Bay to northern Illinois.

I haven't settled anything yet, but am leaning toward one of the more angular designs (like the weekender or Desert Dawg), since my woodworking skills are only fair. Though I have learned a lot working on boats the past few years.

Keep your eyes and mind open and doodle around on paper first. Think about what you want your trailer to do for you and your final result will be quite close to your needs.

Good wishes for your new trailer.... the ride can be bumpy, but the end result will be worth it.

Image to the playground. Working around boats seems to be good preparation for a TD. Just need some wheels.

Look forward to seeing your build so dig out the :pictures: :pictures: :pictures: and keep the bubble oil half full. ;)

I say go for the Desert Dawg profile!! :lol: :lol:

Deb, I thought that it would be easier to build an angular shaped trailer but in retrospect I'm not sure it's the case. I think each shape has its own challenges, rounded OR angular. I would suggest that you choose the shape that you like the best, then build that. You will have your trailer for a long time so build the one you like.

Welcome to the forum. Sounds like you have all the skills you need to build a teardrop. Just jump in and start your build and be sure to post lots of pictures, and if you have questions, just ask.

Hi ZD, welcome to the forum. So, relocated to northern Illinois, huh.
Any where near Rockford, the old home town........50 years ago? Hey, if you can build a boat, building a teardrop should be a cinch. Just get that trailer, slap on a floor, some sides, spars and a roof, and you have got one built.

Now all you have to do is finish it.........hatch lid, galley design and cabinets, lights, doors, windows and what else........oh yes, AC, sound system, stove, sink, water tank, under-floor storage, custom fenders and wheel rims, and perhaps a snap-on porta-potty/changing room. Nothing to it.

Just kidding, keep it simple and get to camping right away.........the second one can have all of the bells and whistles. Most of us have been right where you are, dreaming and planning, and finally actually building a functional, easy to use teardrop, ready for some serious camping.

Roly, Hmmm. Northern Illinois, alas. ZD, I remember it well........

Welcome to the Forum. I too took my inspiration from Joanne's Desert Dawg for the same reason as you, simplicity of design. Having learnt a lot from the first build and gained confidence from that, the next one will be a "true" tear.

Don't be afraid to ask "dumb" questions before and during your build, there is always someone here who has able to answer.

Zendo?

I guess I should explain...

Zendo is the name of my boat. Sailing Vessel Zendo. 1979 Hunter (not the trailer manufacturer) cutter. 37 ft length overall. Draws 5 feet of water.
