Just a quick intro...

My name is Vince and I've been lurking here for the past week or two. My wife and I have only started camping (using a tent) this past year and are not sure we would camp enough to justify the cost of a trailer, but the easy of making and breaking camp and the increase in comfort might just mean that we get out there more often .

I've never towed anything before and the small size of a teardrop makes that just a bit easier to think about doing. If we do end up getting a trailer and even though it's just the two of us right now, we are planning for a family so it must be an adaptable design. I am watching Alfred's build with some interest (it's given me some good ideas).

I'm not a complete klutz with tools, but I am no craftsman (but my father-in-law is!) and building a teardrop seems a bit complicated.

Anyways, I'll keep reading, learning and thinking.

Hi from the south, well a little south of the border at least.


We got our Teardrop last year and were able to go camping twice as much as the previous year. We however did tent camping together for a few years and grew up camping. I never towed anything and still push it into place for backing up.

If I remember correctly then there was someone out of BC renting a custom Teardrop that might be able give you a taste of what it is like to have one before you get comitted. If you are like most then it will really change your life.

Welcome to the fun. Sounds like you have the perfect set-up for building. A father in law with tools, get him on board with the dream maybe you could take turns using the TD, that way you wouldn't actually have to camp with the inlaws

Oh, I wouldn't mind camping with my inlaws. I'll be seeing them for Easter and I'll be talking about teardrops. They also have an old travel trailer that might make a dandy donor chassis .

I'll take pics of it when I see them.

Welcome to the madness, its not really that BAD . I got mine almost finished after 4 months total build time. I've never built anything before and only a thought of how I wanted it to be. Its been FUN, for the most part.

to the playground Vince and wife. Lots of us around with very few tools and no experience. The only way to do it is to and make some sawdust! Take your time and read lots of build threads. It will totally get you sidetracked.

I also recommend Steve F's manual. It has lots of wonderful tips for the novice and professional that are td build related.

Hello fellow Canuck,

Check out www.tadpoletrailers.com and if you see anything on or about our trailers that interest you just ask away. Its not all that hard to do and once you get the first steps done then you can refine and hone. Start with a 4x8x4 3/4" plywood box if need be but get started. The downside is hundreds of new friends dry nights sleep in a rain storm and knowledge that this is only the beginning.

Hey Vince,
I agree with Auntie M-Steve's manual was a lot of help but I departed from it as my building wasn't up to some of it(Lack of Confidence?).
By the way--Our last names are very close, My forefathers came from England, and I was born in Indiana. Lots of Hodgen's in the Frankfort area.
From what I've figure out, the guy that started a trading post/Bar in Hodgenville, Kentucky was kin.
