I think I might need counseling...

Postby TheresaD » Tue May 12, 2009 10:57 pm

I have no idea what I have just gotten myself into.. Boy when you all said that this sickness is catchy you weren't kidding... I started giving the whole T &TT concept serious thought only about 2 weeks ago and have done nothing but read posts on here since then. My plan was to do my research during the summer and give this some serious thought and then go for it and start to build a teardrop in the fall. Well... I happened to see an ad on Craigslist for a Serro Scotty Sportsman today and since it was less than 5 miles from my house...well... I just figured it must be a sign...So I bought it! :? Thanks to the folks from the forum who were quick to respond to my need for advice. I got it for $100! I'm not sure what year it is. I think possibly '63. Couldn't find the vin# to figure that out. Have to do some research to figure out where that might be. I don't have any pics of it yet. It was getting dark when I got it home. I will post some when I do. I'm kinda psyched because alot of the original details (as far as I know) seem to still be intact.. There's definitely a bunch of wood rot from water damage and it's very evident that mice had been living in it at some point. My first mission will be to get rid of their evidence and try to clean it out. Then... I'll start doing my homework and try to figure out where to go from there to try to rehab it or at least figure out if it's something I might be capable of.....I know I read it somewhere... The first step is to admit that I'm helpless...

I'm going to have get after our daughter as she didn't tell me about this trailer. She's in New London and is always sending emails about stuff she finds on Craigslist, bikes, campers, etc. Our teardrop was her find, and it turned into a great purchase. We were watching an old Scotty on Ebay a few weeks ago that was near us, but the bidding went too high. I really don't need another project anyway. Good luck with restoring that trailer, I don't know much about Scottys but hear it was common that they leaked resulting in having to replace a lot of the wood. Bob P.S. Daughter said she just saw a Scotty last weekend at Rocky Neck

I check Craigslist religiously. Normally I just check the Hartford area & Eastern Ct areas..for some reason I checked the northwest CT area and came across it there- however the trailer was listed as being in Glastonbury (Hartford area!) If you are interested in a 67 shasta I saw one on Craigs also this morning. and the woman was supposed to send me pics. I'll let you know if I hear back from her. She was in Bethany CT.

Welcome TheresaD,

While you can get a temporary respite from the madness here, there's no cure. The disease strikes young and old alike, both men and womwn and all in between. lol
Good luck with the build.

Steve

Oh no, you're in for it now. Next thing you'll be buying more tools, talking about cast iron cookware and toting around fake fauna.

BTW, welcome aboard.
Holy cow, Rose is a teenager now! Done? Surely you jest. A teardrop is never "done".

LOL! Yup... I guess you're right..As for the cast iron cookware... um...well... I already started collecting that a couple years ago.. don't have alot yet but I've got some... :D I'm already thinking about the tools. Fortunately for me my friend who towed it home for me last night is about as excited as I am about the darn thing and he can't wait to start ripping it apart to get it going. The good thing about that is he has lots of tools! I'm soooo relieved that he wants to help. I didn't even ask him.. he just decided he was in. I'm less nervous now that I know I'm going to have some help. Took a bunch of pics tonight and I want to put them up. How do you guys all do that usually? I'm assuming the work in progress pics go in a separate topic area and not the newbies section but I don't know for sure... I'm sorry for the long posts..but I'm pretty excited...Can't wait to get lots of advice from everyone. I think this is will be an interesting journey. Guess I'd better savor my tent camping for the rest of this year..... ;)

Theresa...you can start a thread on your build in general discussion. Post your build pics as you progress on the same thread. Most people read that section and you will get the most feedback there.

I don't usually do an entire string of build pics start to finish as the threads can really get long though an entire build. I make a post like, here's the frame...here's the sides, galley, etc...A new post for different steps keeps the responses fresh. I do know that some people don't care for my process however. Just an idea. Welcome aboard...now go have some fun, and post some pics! It won't be a completely smooth road, but the final product will be well worth all your efforts! There is a link in the above header for tips on posting pics. Doug

 Well, if you put all your pictures in one thread then people don't have to go looking all over the board for them. 8) That a heavy hint to the newly addicted..... The other way and perhaps the easiest is to get a photo hosting site and put a url in your address line. Or put them in your album and post a couple. I definitely like the one thread though.

Image to the playground. You did a good job with the pictures btw.

ThreseaD, I have been a professional shrink for over 40 years. When my teardrop trailer tongue is lowered to the ground, I use the interior cushion as a slanted couch for my patients. Now you have already indicated that you need help, are nervous and excited and you definately need counseling. So, here is what I suggest, lie down right here, cross your arms over your heart, close your eyes and repeat after me.....

"I will totally disregard the nonsence that was written in the preceeding paragraph".

Welcome to the forum, where you have come to get helpful information and listen to those of us who have been where you are. Reworking a vintage trailer is an exercise in which you can bring back to life, a relic of the past and you can use it for many years in the future. I know, I just rebuilt a 63 Kenskill Standy and plan to use it for many more years. Good for you, having a friend that has the tools and is excited enough to be willing to help. Remember, take pics as you go along, post em and get feedback from former and present restorers. Good luck.

8) :? Roly
