Hello from Denmark

Postby Shane » Tue May 12, 2009 3:40 pm

Hello everybody

I am just starting to built my trailer and have looked very much toward a teardrop design. Thanks for all the info on this page.

Teardrops are very rare in this part of the world but I hope to able to built one.

Best regards
Shane

Hallo Shane,

Welcome to the club. I live only 700 km away from you, in the Netherlands.
If there are any questions, ask them. If you prefer to write an other language, tell me. My Dannish is very bad, I even don't speak or write it.

Thanks guys !!

My project is kind of special in some ways. First of all I am using an old chassis from a fold-out tent camper. The reason why I am doing this is that my old chassis has our oldstyle license plates. They changes them in 1976 and it will look good and add something special to my camper to keep them.

My next idea is to use a big fiberglas barrel or cylinder that I have had in my shop for some time now. I will cut it in half and use one side of it as my frontend of the camper. Its 6 feet high right now and could allow standing room in the front. I am not sure about the height yet. It seems like 6 feet is to high in the front, so I might cut it down to 5 feet.

Anyway the round front end will give it a special look. I plan to teardrop from the front roof end backwards.

I have been looking in the forum and allready found many good ideas. But I still dont know if I should go with a 2 inch frame or if 1 icnh would be enough for the walls to be stabble.

And Henk, I can read some words in a newspaper from Holland. If you know english, german and danish its not that hard to understand. When you speak its complely different and not understandeble. :D

Shane,

Welcome to the madness.
I happy to see it's spreading just like the Swine Flu! lol
The only cure is to keep building teardrops and camping in them.
It'll help quell the drive for another trailer but not entirely.
Good luck with your build. This is the kindest and nicest site on the net.
You'll get help with any problem and tons of encouragement.

Steve

Hi Shane,

Welcome to the forum. It's been many many years since I've been to Denmark. Didn't see any teardrop trailers then either. :o

Have fun!

Image to the playground Shane. Sounds like you have a unique build in mind. Do you have pictures of the barrels?

Your walls can be pretty thin and still be stable. Mine are 3/8 Baltic Birch with 1" framing. I have foam and 1/8" inside panels. The roof is thicker and insulated.

Have fun and remember to :pictures: :pictures: :pictures: Keeps the bubble in in level. ;) Image

Hi Shane, welcome to the forum. Denmark, ah yes, I remember it well. Came over on a boat from Sweden 20 years ago and had a Mc Donald hamburger in Tivoli Gardens.

That idea of a huge barrel for the front end will make a swell looking teardrop trailer. Now that is really thinking out of the box, good for you. I am looking forward to seeing some pictures of what you have in mind. I might caution you to allow a bit of continued higher headroom behind the barrel edge, so you won't be bumping your head on the steeply slanted rear section of the ceiling. I suppose you plan to have a hatch lid at the rear, and if so, the higher you keep the ceiling, the more room you will have in your galley. Just my 2 cents. Good luck on your build. Keep those pics coming.

Thank you all.

I can tell you a little about my ideas and hopefully you can let me know what you think of it.

The reason for building a trailer is that I am the founder of a ghosthunting group in Denmark, and we need a trailer for towing equipment and batteries. Often we are out where there are no restrooms so the women in the group would like us to carry a porta potti with us.

So I got the fiberglas barrel with the porta potti in mind. Its about 6 or 7 feet high and has a diameter of 4½ feet. The easiest thing would be to mount it on the chassis and drive. But it would not look so nice.

So my idea was to mount the barrel upright in the front of the chassis and let it have a teardrop rear end. This weekend I started out building and quickly decide that the fiberglass barrel was kind of heavy. So I have decided to use it as a form to bend plywood around it. That way my teardrop will have a round nose.

I plan it to be 5 feet high in the front, like if the barrel was standing upright in the front.

I hope to take some pictures next weekend when I work on it again. I am a truckdriver and am only home on weekends.

I have worked on cars for many years, but its the first time that I work with wood. I hope to be able to built this the way I see it in my mind.
