Hello from Kansas City

Postby Dick » Wed Aug 19, 2009 10:54 pm

To start off I would like to thank a multitude of "characters"' from the planet Earth for the wealth of information posted. Four weeks ago I stumbled across this site and have since been "addicted" to reading threads under each topic. A special thanks to Victor Star in Shawnee for letting me see his teardrop a few weeks ago first hand and ask a gazillion questions on his day off no less.
I felt like a 10 year old kid on Christmas morning last Friday when I drove to Excelsior Springs to pick up my new trailer chasis - 5' by 10' chasis with 2000 lb Dexter torsion axle, 14" tires, etc. Got it home and started on the build the next morning - I did learn several things over the weekend though: however many clamps you own you still don't have enough, should've heeded the warnings that the roofing tar should be classified as hazardous material, and that the PL Adhesive on your hands is almost as permanent as a tatoo.
I'm sure that there are many "new lessons" to be learned over the course of the build but that's part of the excitement. Each night I'm on here searching for "how to's" for the next step.
Again - Thanks for all the threads/posts on topics and I'm sure that I'll be asking for help in the near future.

Hi Dick, aha, another builder aboard. Of course you are going to build a woodie, after all, wood is good. (but aluminum lasts longer). Good luck, take pics, post em, ask questions, and git-er-done. Enjoy.

Welcome to the forum Dick. Glad to see another local on board.
When you came to Excelsior you were only 12 miles from Rayville. If I'd know you could have come on up and had a visit.

Welcome Dick

Sounds as though you've got a great start going and you've learned about PL early, keep a bottle of Mineral spirits handy and wipe your hands off before the PL begins to dry too far and you can keep the black stains at bay, at leastfor awhile, I should be saftey minded and say to wear surgical gloves or such, but I just can't work in gloves, now if you are going to skin in aluminum, please do wear gloves while working with the sheets, they can be unbelievably sharp.

OK, now I have answered two questions that you didn't even ask, see how easy it is.

Keep us posted and take lots of pictures, down the road that camera can be very important. when your trying to remember just where that hidden bolt or wire is, oh and it make asking questions and getting the right answers, oh so much easier.

Hey Dick,

Welcome to the forum. I used some stuff called "Rapid Remover" to get the PL adhesive and the roofing tar off my hands. It's made for vinyl decal removal but works great for cleaning up also. The Crawford gathering is less than a month away. Do you think you'll make it down either to camp of at least visit? This will be a great chance to meet a bunch of teardroppers and see a wide variety of camper styles. Don't forget about LCG in October. It is the must attend event of the year, at least for me it is.

Later,
Darren

Welcome Dick, and you already did the best thing -- to see one in person and consider coming down to see us in mid Sept at Crawford ... it's a group camp and there's lots of room if you want to pitch a tent (for the last time !) haha I even have one you can borrow !

:applause: Congrats, You got to see a most professional build when you looked at Victor Star, Darren is particular with his process and you see it in the finished product. The inlay and the chrome are awesome.
Look forward to seeing you at Crawford, even if it is a visit or a campout without the finished product. Then I hear LCG is a must. lol lol lol.....
