New Guy From Virginia

Postby gullywompr » Sun Dec 20, 2009 12:17 pm

Hello all. My name is Curtis Olson from Hamilton, Va, about 50 miles west of Washington DC. I'm 50 years old, married, have two teenage children. I write software for a living.

I have been reading this forum for months, and have become fairly obsessed with it. In fact, many nights I have blown of guitar practice because I can't pull myself away from here.

I came here because I am tired of a leaky tent when I go to bluegrass festivals. Something small, simple, and used in warmer months would be good. I don't hunt or fish, just hang out with friends at festivals and other social events. Sometimes my 15 year old son goes with me. My wife and daughter will only sleep at home or in hotels.

Money is tight, and I have no garage to build in. I could erect a temporary shelter for a a few months. I am good with woodworking - I build musical instruments. Never worked with metal or electrical.

I'd like to have something for this October for the must-go-to event for me and my buddies. But I am not the type to do a rush-job on things, so I wouldn't cut corners to make a deadline. Well see what happens. Right now, I don't know what I want, I've changed my mind several times so far.

You folks here are great. Positive, encouraging, and sharing.
Cheers,
Curtis Olson

Welcome!

Postby Alfred » Sun Dec 20, 2009 12:51 pm

Hey, Welcome from the beautiful, Blue Ridge Mountains of Western, NC!

My Wife and I used to play music at several of the folk and art/street festivals in Florida, years ago before we had kids and had time for such things. I remember the stage performances were great, but the 'real' good times for the musicians happened back at camp, at night, in the song circles around the campfires.

I love to camp, so do the kids, and my sweet Wife tolerates it, but the Wife and I are both tired of sleeping on the ground, so a small camper seemed a good option for us, too. Didn't want a big honkin' RV, just something to sleep in, comparable to a tent, but off the ground, dry and more solid.

Anyway, welcome and keep us posted to your progress!

I live at the base of the southern end of the Catoctin mountain chain, little more than foothills in this area. On the western side of that chain is the Shenandoah River, and the beautiful Shenandoah Valley beyond that, then you hit the Blue Ridge.

You know it! I've also had a good time at night being something other than a musician. 8)

Thanks! Whenever I travel down I-81, I always try to find an excuse to stop in Staunton. It is one of the most beautiful towns in the state of Virginia. Now I have another reason!
