and I still don't have my bookmarks done over. You can put small children in a td or in an attached tent. I think Endo did a good job keeping it small and giving the kids a safe place. You could actually get a larger TD and all sleep in it till the kidos are bigger.

there are many options to fill your needs, you have to decide what works for you. we have a 4x10 teardrop with a custom side tent, it takes about 10 minutes to set up the teardrop with the tent. you could sleep in the tent with the kids in the teardrop or the other way around

Thanks everyone! I'll run these by the spouse. We don't really have the time or energy to build our own from scratch but we could do some customization once we had a basic unit. Maybe I COULD string up a kid or two in a hammock! (Be fun to try.)

Miriam, that Raindrop is crazy enough it just might work...BUT...it's not cheap. Not that we have to go cheap, but we would have to see it first if it wasn't! No dealers around here of course, but I'll contact them Monday to see if they're doing any shows or have any way of showing me one out here.

Today we stopped by a place with T@Bs and another with R-Pods. Those things are BIG! At least they are on the outside.

Eek. I bought a big tent. (Our old one was too squishy for four.) Some nice pads because I take sleep very seriously. Dug up a big screen room/awning thing (we didn't have such luxuries when I was a kid!). Sleeping bags. Etc.

I think we're going to need a teardrop for gear, even if we sleep on the ground. We can manage with our hitch-mounted cargo box for a really short trip, maybe, but for more than a weekend, something will have to grow. And a dedicated kitchen spot would sure be nice.

It makes my search a bit easier though, now that I've accepted that we're tenting and not trying to fit 4 people in a trailer. And when the kids are older, the "cargo" trailer can be used for sleeping.

I very much appreciate the input from y'all here! And if nobody minds, I'll be poking around here more while we figure out what to get. (We really aren't capable of building, unfortunately.) Thanks! -L

Poke all you want! You'll be getting around to something better than a tent someday, even if you wait til the kids are grown and you get tired of the hard ground!

I think I'd like something I could remove the galley and use for around-town stuff hauling when needed. I miss having a truck every once in a while. I can't build a trailer, even with helpful sites like this one. No skills, knowledge, or time. But I think I could rig a serviceable galley.

And yet I don't want to be responsible for pretty woodwork when I'm camping or hauling drywall! I'd feel bad if a bird pooped on it.

I'd love to make one but I know my capabilities. Right after I finish that tiny grout job I've put off for two years I'll think about it.
