Howdy From Iraq

Postby Grit » Sun Mar 07, 2010 2:09 pm

I'm currently serving overseas and I've been finalizing some plans and been reading a lot about tear drops and other type trailers. My wife has a thing about in closed spaces so my hope of a tear drop has had to take on some mods. I think when i get home to Alabama in the summer I hope to start on my trailer by the fall. I live in the Huntsville area of North Alabama and I felt I should send a greeting out there for all of you I've learned from and watched.
Thank you guys for all your knowledge and aid, and I hope to start posting a blog of my own soon. :)
And if there are any North Alabama Huntsville and surrounding area people out there, I'd love to buy you a beer and talk shop, cause while I've learned a lot watching, I learn a lot better when i have someone to talk to, thanks again

Hi Grit, and welcome to the forum. We all owe you a debt of gratitude... :applause:

I am sure that Huntsville AL will be a much happier place when you are home working on that teardrop. Make sure and send us some pictures.

Best wishes,

Hi Grit,
First and foremost, Thank You for serving in the army and helping to keep us safe at home.

Now welcome to the forum. I'm sure it is a good distraction for you to think about building a teardrop when you get back to the States. Looking forward to seeing pictures of your build in the future.

Stay safe and take good care of each other...........

Closed-in spaces

Postby Blumie » Sun Mar 07, 2010 6:33 pm

Dear Grit,

Since you're still planning your build, you might install an extra window or two in positions that would allow your wife to see she's not so closed in.

Our teardrop has windows only in the two cabin doors. I'm a bit claustrophobic, too, and wondered if I could be comfortable in the cabin at night. It has not been a problem. After getting into bed at night and turning off the lights, I reach over and make sure there's a small gap in the curtain through which I can see outside.

I've come to think of our teardrop as a little silver cocoon, quiet (the insulation also soundproofs) and protective against both the elements and also things that go bump/growl/screech in the night.

Tell your wife there's at least one teardropping claustrophobe who's so comfortable she finds it easy to sleep in on camping mornings, that'll appeal to her! ;)

Thank you for your service to our great country! Come home safe and well!':applause:

Hi Grit, I am very claustraphobic. We got a tear drop from a friend before we got ours so I could try it out. We camped in the back yard so, in case of an "emergency" I could head for the house. It was smaller than the one we finally got and I slept with the door on my side open so I could hang on leg out and I didn't feel so trapped. When we got ours I still sleep with the door open when I can. We have a side room from Camp Inn on my side so no problem. I have got used to sleeping in it and love it now with no panic attacks. I have surprised myself because I was really bad about close places. I still have a problem with any place that holds my arms down. Tell your wife I know how she feels but I did manage to work it out so give it a try.

Grit: I believe you are not the only one in Iraq interested in teardrops. We met a young man named James in CT in 2008 who I think was Army reserves, while we were camping with some other teardrop owners. He was quite interested in the trailers. I think he is in Iraq now. Ours is a 4' wide, and the two of us are very comfortable in it. Be careful, stay safe, and start building when you get home. Mary & Bob

Welcome Grit, we're honored to have you on the forum. Check in as much as you can and enjoy the playground! And when you come home, we'll all welcome you just like we did another member of T&TTT and brother of yours serving in Iraq - "MSG Hall".

Welcome to the playground Grit! No reason you can't make your TD bigger. My husband was sure he could never sleep in one of those. I made it 5' tall and put in a huge window. He loves it....... ;)

Hola Grit. My most sincere thanks for the sacrifice you and your family are making for our country. I'm in Huntsville as well. I'm buying the beer when you get home and if there's anything I can do for your family in the mean time shoot me an email at [email protected]. Let me know when you are home. I've got a shop and can help with a frame build.

You stay safe over there amigo!

Hi Grit. Welcome aboard from one military family to another! I'm new here too. These are a great group of people here with loads of helpful info. I'm not a builder but I will love to see what you build. Aren't these tears fantastic! Take care and I'll be watching for you to come home and start posting pictures.

Oh yea the wife also had a thing about closed in spaces and asked if Id do the interior in white. Of course the doors on both sides have windows. I saw a tear on the forum w/ the roof done in glass. That may help just an idea.
Hope to see you on the road.
