Hello from SE Idaho

Postby jride200 » Mon Mar 01, 2010 10:11 pm

Hi All...

I've posted on this forum a handful of times in the past, but I thought it appropriate to now introduce myself. My name is Jason, and I'm currently living in SE Idaho, where I attend aircraft mechanic's school (we've got a stack of aluminum at the airport tall enough to skin MANY teardrops... and I can buy it at salvage prices!).

Having recently moved to the west, I'm eager to build my first teardrop so that I can hit the road! Next ski season, I'm planning to spend a few weeks at Sun Valley, and I'd really like to do it Warren Miller style--in my teardrop. The west much more room to roam than I've ever had and I've been enjoying every minute of it.

Thanks to everyone, for the help and support that I know you will provide.

Jason

Welcome from a little bit South of you. There is nothing like roaming the West in a teardrop. Hope to see you down the road someday.

Welcome to the insanity!

What a gold mine -- all that aluminum.

That aircraft training could be a blessing too.

Hi Dave, I hope to be in touch with you soon, concerning places to camp in our state, etc.. Yes, my access to the aluminum is huge. I really don't know if I could afford a build if I had to pay retail for it. Also, one of my favorite things about this aluminum is that it has been sitting outside for several years (thats why we can't use it on aircraft) and has developed quite a patina. I'm hoping to build a new trailer, which looks 30 or so years old! And, yes, the aircraft training will be extremely helpful in the build of my tear. That, and the access to the hanger and all of the program tools. Cheers, Jason

Idaho is blessed with almost unlimited camping spaces, particularly if you are into boondocking!

That is the good news. State parks, the few, are getting pricey. Forest Service campgrounds are quite plentiful, but other than an outhouse, most are pretty basic, often even without potable water. That is OK too.

It is a great state to camp in, though I often go into Eastern Oregon, it is actually easier to get to than a lot of the Idaho sites.

Sounds like you are off to a good start.

Welcome to the group, are you going for an A&P license?
You could potentially come up with a super light weight all aluminum design.

Hello neighbor. Caldwell is my domicile as well!

Near Sumpter; past Unity on to Granite or Herford. From Caldwell I can be in Sumpter in two and a half hours pulling my tear.

Up above Idaho City is another close place. There is a string of campgrounds along there.

Of course there is boon docking, wherever you wish to stop.

We go to Leslie gulch at least once a year and that is in Oregon.

Succor creek (near leslie gulch as you probably know) is a favorite camping spot of ours for this time of year (well....maybe in a couple more weeks)....never been to Sumptor, will have to try that this year. Of course there are so many excellent places to camp all around this area.

I may have to stop by and check out your tear before too long if you don't mind.

Succor creek campground can be pretty nice, but i still prefer Leslie Gulch. A couple generations of rock pickers have taken the easy rocks from the area. A son in law bought a house in Washington state that had tons and tons of rocks, many were "thunder eggs" from that area.

I was taught about rocks by a friend who puts them all into two categories: Leaverites and heaverites. I tell my wife that if she can put it in her pocket, she can bring it home.

My tear is in the shop right now getting some repair, a face lift and some fenders. Should be ready for early camping.

Glad to talk tears any time, come on over!

Hi all, and thank you for welcoming me to the forum. Yes, I am working towards getting my A&P license. A super lightweight semi-monocoque would be awesome (recall seeing an amazing one-off on this site a while back, that was almost certainly built by someone involved with aviation), but I'm thinking, at least for my first trailer, Keep It Simple Silly! Cheers, Jason
