Gidday everyone,

I'm Shaun from Sarina, Queensland, Australia. I just found this site the other day while looking for TTT. After many years of sleeping in tents and on the ground my body has finally told me that it time to up grade and have some comfort while enjoying my passions. At the moment I'm a member of the Ulysses Club ( People over forty that enjoy riding motor bikes ) and I have been going to our annual AGM all over Australia. This year it was in Albany Western Australia ( some 6000 Kilometers from home ),well while going to and from there I got rained on and just wanted some where to be warm and dry. I have now decide to up grade to a trike and a TTT. I am planning to build my own trailer, but I want it to be easy to build( is anything ever easy ) and quick and simple to set up and get into. I have an idea as to what I want and was wondering if any one has already made a trailer like it. Basically the whole back of the trailer hingers up at the top and then when it locks in the roof raises up at the back with a piano hinge at the front of the roof. The back wall has drop down legs in it which helps to hold the lot until the roof is locked in the up position. The trailer will be about 2.5 m long, 1.2m high and 1.5m wide in the travel state and 3.7 long, 1.2( at the front) & 2.0 (at the back) with the rear section creating a awning off the back of the trailer. I hope that some if not all of you can picture what I am trying to discribre here. I will try and do some plans and post them here for all to see, but in the mean time if there is some one that has already made a trailer like this I'd appreciate if I could see what you have built. BTW, I am going to make this out out Alloy.

Welcome to the Madness, Mate  No disrespect but your trailer sounds mighty involved. Maybe if you apply the k.i.s.s. principle

Cheers

Hi paul, good to hear from you. You could be right with the trailer being involved. I'll just have to sit down and do some plans and take them to a bloke I know in the area and run it by him. He has built a 24' fifth wheel out of alloy. My main concern is weight as I'll be towing the trailer behind a trike. I want to keep it light, aerodynamic and easy to set up ( even the wife could set it up in minutes.). If the mate says too hard then I'll look at a TD out of alloy.

You do realise that a weight restriction applies to what a trike can tow down here. It's about 320kg tops. The 4' Aussie teardrop camper just scrapes in.

As a sideline, you need to at least double thicknesses when you use alloy. The weight saving, to attain the req'd strength, is negligible.

And, as an extra, check the ADR requirements with your local Department of Transport office.
