Howdy Everyone!

A great big Howdy Y'all!

Finally joined today. I know there's another Elmo on this forum, so hopefully we won't be confused for each other much. (when in doubt, if the response is goofy, ignorant, or of no help whatsoever, it's probably mine! LOL)

I've been looking at tears and TTTs for over a year now, and had planned on building something eventually; We have an annual family reunion out at the family farm, and I've grown tired of tent sleeping on air mattresses. (my back can't take it anymore. )

Well, we stayed in a hotel last year, and planned on doing it again this year. Only problem is they ran out of rooms. (our fault for waiting to long to make plans really)

So, "damn the torpedoes, full steam ahead!" I've got until just about the end of July to get something built and maiden trip ready.

I'll be posting my build progress over in the journals section for posterity. (also so that I can point out the exact moment where I screwed up when I discover an error later on! :R ) I've already built the HF 1800lb trailer, and will have completed the floor structure by tonight; I did manage to take a few pictures along the way, so I'll post those up while it's raining tomorrow night.

I've already garnered tons of inspiration and ideas from many of your builds here, and I want to thank each of you in advance if you happen to spot something that looks like it was ripped off from your build design. (because it probably was!)

Anyhow, I'm sure it'll be said again and again over the next month or so, but thanks in advance to everyone that helps me out along the way!

Welcome! I can relate to that! We have a 4th of July community picnic with many attendees on our property (the former family farm) and teardrops would be great for the family to sleep in. We purchased our teardrop but seriously considered building. We purchased because a) we found a great deal, and b) we were impatient to get camping!

Good luck with your project!

Thanks, Pat!

Yeah, I'd agree that purchasing a commercial 14' travel trailer would be the most direct solution, but I just can't afford the $9k plus they want. (Plus the industry seems to ignore the needs of those who desire a smaller travel trailer)

Also, since our farm has a pole barn with complete amenities, I don't really need a toilet, shower, sink or cooking abilities inside; it just adds to the costs of the trailer for features that we will seldom/never use. In off times when I camp with this trailer elsewhere, I'd be cooking over a campfire, or in dire rainy circumstances, a coleman white gas stove under an 'EZ-up' tent or side mounted awning. (my wife won't ever 'rough it', so anyplace we camp would have to have real bathrooms and showers anyhow. :D )

E,
Welcome :) to the forum from another Pennsylvanian. We are from the Altoona area. I hear ya about tent camping and sleeping on the ground. This old frame cant take it. So thats the reason we built our Tear. You need to join the TearJerkers and check out some Tears up close. Good way to figure out what you want and dont need and the people are great.
Hey if we can build one anyone can. Lol

Have you thought about rentals for your family reunion that way you can take your time with your build.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys/gals.

While I appreciate the advice about renting, it's not really in our budget right now; every place around here wants hundreds of dollars to rent for 4.5 days, which would easily contribute a good chunk towards my build cost.

I should mention, there is a caveat with tears/travel trailers for us; we need to be able to stand in whatever I build and it has to have enough space in it for a pack-and-play; we have a darling little infant daughter that will be going along for the ride with us, so in lieu of a galley and any kind of fresh/gray water facilities, I'm going for straight sleeping and floor space.

When all is done, I definitely will try to get to some of the events, if for no other reason than to give people a good laugh at my handi-work! :)
