Newbie from NY

Postby JeffW » Tue Aug 02, 2011 3:27 pm

I have been lurking on the forum for a few weeks now and figure it's time to introduce myself. My name is Jeff and I live in Upstate NY. I plan to build a TD and have been working on the plan. Some of my criteria are #1 a comfortable Queen size bed. I have a bad back so no sleeping on the ground for me.AC and heat. I want to be able to put the TD in my barn when it's not in use. Aerodynamic and relative light weight. I looked at ready made trailers and how they affect the gas mileage and I'm hoping I an do better. I call my design The SST. Super slippery Tear. Construction will be steel frame, wood and aluminum sides and fiberglass roof. As you all will see I like rounded curves, and think that this shape increase my gas mileage. I have attached a couple of preliminary design shots.

I have already gained a lot of knowledge from hanging around here and I'm sure that there will be more to come. Thanks to all.

Jeff,
First let me say "Welcome" to the madness!! I really like your design, and wish you well in making it happen. However, I think the compound curves will
be a challenge. You may want to consider using glass over foam to achieve the shape.
BTW/ I am in Central NY.

Larry, thanks for the welcome, and I will be doing exactly as you said. Glass over foam and then I will be removing the form.I will do something along the lines of what I did here except on a larger scale

RE: New Design

Hi JeffW,

Welcome to this great forum.

Nice design! It'll be unique and should be more slippery aero-wise than
the average tear. It'll be interesting to follow you build thread [hint,
hint].

The front windows are quite singular. They look similar to the "eye"
designs the ancient Greeks used to put on the bows of their ships. Maybe
you could make a travel cover for them that'd look like those?

Also check out the Foamie section. It sounds like you could give some tips
and such others could use.

I'm originally from WNY [Olean] now sweltering in SC. We're trying to
become reverse snowbirds now. Too hot here in the summers, too snowy there in the winters.

Good luck on your design and build.

Cheers,
Norm/mezmo

Very 40's, art deco look, kind of reminds me of the super hero cars and vehicles. Be anxious to see this one as it takes shape.

Wow, that really is a cool shape. I'm very curious about the glass on foam technique. Thanks for sharing.
